Dozens charged after NEO dogfighting raid


AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Authorities in northeast Ohio have arrested and charged 47 people from five states after a police raid uncovered an alleged dogfighting ring.

Federal and local authorities raided an Akron home Saturday after receiving tips about possible dogfighting. Police said two dogs were fighting at the time of the raid, and dozens of people watching scattered when officers entered the garage of the home.

Authorities seized more than $50,000, 11 vehicles and two guns from the property.

Humane officers rescued eight dogs after the raid. Two were bleeding from fresh wounds and were taken to a veterinary hospital.

The Akron Beacon Journal reported all 47 people arrested have been charged in Akron Municipal Court with fourth-degree felony dogfighting and additional charges are possible. The Plain Dealer in Cleveland reported bonds have been set between $10,000 and $100,000.
