DEA agents check NFL medical staffs

Federal drug enforcement agents showed up unannounced Sunday to check at least two NFL teams’ medical staffs as part of an investigation into former players’ claims that teams mishandled prescription drugs, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press.

There were no arrests, according to the official, who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The official said the San Francisco 49ers’ staff was checked at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, after they played the New York Giants. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were checked at a Washington-area airport after playing the Redskins.

The operation was still ongoing, and other teams may be checked later Sunday.

The Drug Enforcement Agency did not target specific teams, but the checks were done to measure whether clubs were generally in compliance with the Controlled Substances Act.

Michigan DL Clark arrested in Ohio

ANN ARBOR, Mich.

Michigan defensive end Frank Clark is in legal trouble again, locked in an Ohio jail on a domestic violence charge.

Online records show the 21-year-old Ypsilanti-area resident was being held without bond Sunday in the Erie County jail in Sandusky, Ohio.

Perkins Township police arrested Clark on Saturday and said Sunday they expect to release more information soon.

Coach Brady Hoke says he’s aware of the case but hasn’t yet spoken with Clark. He says Michigan “will respect the legal process.”

Clark was arrested in 2012 for stealing a laptop computer from a dorm room. He was sentenced under a law that cleared the felony from his record after he completed probation.

Clark has 42 tackles and 4 1/2 sacks this season for Michigan, which hosts Maryland on Saturday.

Ben Bruce wins Las Vegas Marathon

LAS VEGAS

Ben Bruce of Flagstaff, Ariz., had little trouble pulling away from his closest competitors Sunday night to win the Las Vegas Marathon easily in a time of 2 hours, 27 minutes, 22 seconds.

On a flat course that ran primarily along famed Las Vegas Boulevard, Bruce moved past Bartosz Olszewski of Poland at the 15-mile mark and was never in danger of losing his lead. He and Olszewski were virtually together through the first half of the race, running that distance in 1:12:51.

With rock bands performing live along the course and Elvis impersonators among the field of more than 5,000 runners, Bruce, 32, seemed to have no trouble winning his fifth marathon this year. He also was victorious at New Orleans, San Diego, St. Louis and Montreal.

Olszewski’s time was 2:30:31.

The women’s winner was Cathy Cullen of Winnipeg, who won in 2:56:57.
