South Dakota State 59, Western Illinois 24

BROOKINGS, S.D.

Austin Sumner threw for 366 yards with a career-high six touchdowns and South Dakota State rolled. Jason Schneider hauled in two touchdown receptions from Sumner, the second making it 35-17 at half. Zach Zenner rushed for 132 yards on 17 carries with two touchdowns, including a 67-yard breakaway on the Jackrabbits’ first play from scrimmage. He also caught a 40-yard score from Sumner, his third touchdown of the first half. Sumner and Jake Wieneke connected three times in the third quarter, helping South Dakota State (7-4, 4-3 Missouri Valley) push to a 56-24 lead. Wieneke had 10 receptions for 159 yards and Schneider had seven for 114. Wieneke’s 14 touchdown receptions this season is a new school record. Trenton Norvell threw for 214 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. J.C. Baker had 97 yards rushing with a score for the Leathernecks (4-7, 2-5).

North Dakota State 45, Missouri State 10

SPRINGFIELD, MO.

Carson Wentz threw a career-high five touchdown passes to lead North Dakota State. Wentz threw for 247 yards, and his five touchdowns tied a Bison school record for touchdown passes thrown in a game. John Crockett’s 6-yard TD run capped a 12-play drive with 7:55 left before the break, and the Bison went on to score 42 points and shut out the Bears in the second and third quarters. Crockett finished with 177 yards on 27 carries. Zach Vraa added 119 yards with five receptions and a touchdown for North Dakota State (10-1, 6-1 Missouri Valley). Kierra Harris threw for 141 yards with two interceptions, and the Bears (4-7, 1-6) were held to just 99 yards rushing. Harris found Gannon Sinclair at the start of the fourth after a seven-play, 81-yard drive for Missouri State’s only touchdown.

Illinois State 45, South Dakota 26

VERMILLION, S.D.

Marshaun Coprich ran for two touchdowns and Tre Roberson threw for one and ran for two more as Illinois State beat South Dakota. Coprich gained 221 yards on 33 carries for his school-record 10th straight 100-plus yards rushing performance. He gained 157 yards in the first half, scoring on runs of 56 and 28 yards. Roberson had TD runs of 12 and 9 yards and hit Cameron Meredith on a 32-yard scoring pass for a 28-12 halftime lead. He was 16 of 29 for 226 yards and gained 71 yards on 13 carries. Josh Burch intercepted a pass by Kevin Earl and ran 46 yards for a Redbirds’ score with 9 seconds to play. Earl passed for two TDs and ran for another and Nick Aussieker added a 19-yard field goal for the Coyotes (2-9, 0-7 Missouri Valley). Illinois State (9-1, 6-1) held the Coyotes to 20 yards rushing and outgained them 519-315.

Northern Iowa 40, Southern Illinois 21.

CARBONDALE, ILL.

Brion Carnes threw for two touchdowns, David Johnson ran for two more and the Northern Iowa’s defense and special teams scored in a victory over Southern Illinois. Turnovers loomed large in the win for the Panthers (7-4, 5-2 Missouri Valley). Max Busher returned an interception 24 yards to set up Johnson’s 1-yard touchdown. Tim Kilfoy’s second pick-six this season made it 21-0. In the third quarter, Tate Omli recovered a fumbled punt snap in the end zone for a 27-0 advantage. In the final quarter, Ryan West was intercepted a third time, this one by Ray Mitchell, setting up Carnes’ 32-yard scoring pass to Brett LeMaster on the next play. UNI’s defense and special teams have scored 153 of the team’s 349 points this season. MyCole Pruitt became SIU’s career receptions leader with 211 after making nine catches Saturday.
