The Curbstone Coaches benefit spaghetti dinner scholarship fundraiser is Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m at Lucianno’s Banquet Center. Donations are $10 and you can eat in or carry out

Dinner includes spaghetti, meatball, salad, dessert, coffee or a soft drink.

Greg Kreiger ( Director of Operations) Boardman Youth Baseball Field of Dreams will be the Curbstone Coaches guest speaker at Luciannos Banquet Center on Monday at noon. Public is welcome.

Penguins end season at Great Lakes meet

Madison, Wis.

The Youngstown State cross country teams concluded their seasons at the Great Lakes Region Championships at the Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course. The men placed 21st out of 30 teams with a score of 572 points while the women finished 26th out of 32 squads scoring a 783. Leading the way for the men was Austin McLean who was 60th in the 10K with a time of 31:29. For the women, McKinsie Klim was the top placer at 127th with a time of 22:36 in the 6K event.

Ursuline’s Ohalek picks Otterbein University

Ursuline senior Stephanie Ohalek has selected Otterbein University to continue her softball career. Stephanie is a three-year starter as an outfielder and first baseman. She has a career .350 batting average and has been amongst the Irish’s hitting leaders in average, RBI’s, doubles and triples. She has lead the team to three district appearances, and one regional appearance. She is a 2015 team captain. Stephanie also carries a 4.1622 GPA.

Palone becomes world’s top harness driver

WASHINGTON, PA.

Already North America’s “winningest” harness racing driver, Dave Palone broke the world record at The Meadows Racetrack and Casino when he notched career win 16,754 to surpass the mark of 16,753 held by Germany’s Heinz Wewering. The record-breaker came with Missy Tap Tina in the 15th and final race of the day.

In the winners’ circle presentation, an emotional Palone said he felt his father—Marion “Butch” Palone, who died Nov. 4—“was with me around the final turn.”

He also accepted videotaped congratulations from Wewering, who joked that he hoped Palone wouldn’t roll up too many wins so that Wewering might have the opportunity to catch him.

US falters late in 2-1 loss to Colombia

LONDON

Teofilo “Teo” Gutierrez headed in a tiebreaking goal in the 87th minute, and Colombia rallied to beat the United States 2-1 in an exhibition at Fulham’s Craven Cottage.

Jozy Altidore converted a penalty kick in the 10th minute, his 25th international goal, after a hand ball against the South Americans. Altidore has scored just once for Sunderland this season.

Third-ranked Colombia tied the score on a 61st-minute goal by Carlos Bacca, and the Americans allowed a goal from the 86th minute on for the third straight match.

For one night, west London felt more like Barranquilla, with thousands of raucous fans wearing Colombia’s yellow jersey.

YSU volleyball drops regular-season finale

The Youngstown State volleyball team lost its regular-season finale in four sets to Cleveland State at the Beeghly Center. The set scores were 21-25, 25-11, 26-24, 25-17.

Sam Brown had five of her team-high 11 kills in the first set, and senior Lexi Egler posted 10 kills and nine digs in her final home match. Fellow senior Shannon Watson finished with seven kills and a team-best six blocks.YSU finished the regular season with a 16-13 overall mark and a 7-7 record in conference play.
