Ohio cancer-research fundraiser generates $21M

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Organizers of a bicycling event in central Ohio say riders and supporters raised more than $21 million for cancer research this year, setting a record for the fundraiser.

More than 7,000 riders and 2,500 volunteers participated in the two-day Pelotonia event in August.

The Columbus Dispatch reports the event has generated $82 million in fundraising over six years. The latest check was presented Thursday to the head of Ohio State University’s cancer hospital.

The money goes toward purposes such as scientific fellowships, equipment and helping researchers get going on projects.
