Man pleads not guilty in Philadelphia kidnapping

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A man accused of grabbing a 22-year-old Philadelphia woman off the street has pleaded not guilty to a federal kidnapping charge.

In federal court today, 37-year-old Delvin Barnes, of Virginia, waived his right to a bail hearing and agreed to stay behind bars. He was indicted Thursday.

The FBI says Barnes abducted Carlesha Freeland-Gaither as she walked home on Nov. 2 and forced her into his car. In a motion for pretrial detention filed today, prosecutors say she was “forced to lie bound and cold in the trunk of the defendant’s car.” Federal agents found them three days later in Jessup, Maryland.

Barnes is also a suspect in the abduction and attempted murder of a 16-year-old Richmond, Virginia, girl who was doused in bleach.

Both victims survived.
