After starting its teen program with a Minute to Win It them in September. The Austintown library’s themed event for Oct. 21 was Halloween duct tape, in which the teens made various objects out of duct tape.
“Everybody loves duct tape, and you can make anything with it,” assistant supervisor Starr Jones said. “Now they have nice Halloween duct tape and so it’s sort of for kids who don’t want to dress up. They can make a bracelet or a bow tie.
“We’re trying to do this program every month and it’ll be something different every month.”
Jones said the library has been working hard to build up its teen programs.
“We have the teens that come in every day after school, so this is more for kids that just come in for a specific program,” she said. “We’re trying to build it up but we’re working on it.”
Jones said November’s theme will be Silent Library, based on a Japanese game show.
“They did a version on MTV,” she said. “It’s about a group of six people who sit at a table in a library and one person does a funny stunt and they have to complete the stunt while everyone else has to be quiet. If you’re too loud you lose.”
For the Halloween duct tape event, the teens made a bow tie, plus two different kinds of bracelets out of duct tape, one a braided bracelet and the other a spider bracelet.
Jones supplied the materials needed for the project. Other than rolls of different colored duct tape, they included floral wire, velcro, rulers and scissors.
Jones made one of each project to display. She said making them, especially the spider bracelet, was more difficult than she anticipated.
“It was harder than I thought,” she said. “It looked like it’d be easier, but I had a hard time getting the little wires in there and it wasn’t cutting very nice.”
