Film about Civil War battle with local ties
WARREN
The Civil War 150 Committee of the Sutliff Museum will present a free screening of the film “The Battle of Franklin” at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Thomas Meeting Room of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, 444 Mahoning Avenue NW.
The screening will include commentary by historian Wendell Lauth. Re-enactors in uniform also will display artifacts from the Civil War.
This 1864 battle in Tennessee is of special significance to Trumbull Countians, because two generals from the county were involved.
Gen. Emerson Opdyke of Hubbard led a counterattack that turned the tide and enabled the Union Army to achieve an important victory. Gen. Jacob D. Cox, who had been superintendent of schools in Warren in the 1850s, also fought there.
