YOUNGSTOWN

Bishop George V. Murry of the Diocese of Youngstown has appointed Mary Fiala acting superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese, effective immediately.

Fiala joined the diocesan staff in 2011 as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. She had been principal at St. Joan of Arc School in Canton from 1999 to 2011 and at SS. Philip and James School in Canal Fulton for nine years before that.

Being being named principal, Fiala was a classroom teacher at St. Paul School in North Canton from 1979 to 1991. Fiala earned a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in elementary administration from the University of Akron.

“I am very grateful to Ms. Fiala for assuming these new responsibilities,” Bishop Murry said in a news release. “She brings to the superintendent’s position many years of experience in Catholic-school administration, and I look forward to continuing to work with her.”

A national search for a new superintendent will begin later this month.
