Alex Ovechkin and Marcus Johansson each scored two goals as Washington extended the Blue Jackets’ losing streak to nine games. Braden Holtby stopped 24 shots, and Nicklas Backstrom and Andre Burakovsky had two assists apiece to help the Capitals win their third straight. After Johansson gave Washington the lead for good with 66 seconds elapsed, Ovechkin scored twice during a nine-minute span of the first period to make it 3-1. It was a one-goal game before Johansson scored on a wraparound at 14:39 of the third period. Cam Atkinson and David Savard scored for the injury-plagued Blue Jackets, 0-8-1 since Oct. 23. They have been outscored 39-18 over that span. The nine-game skid equals the longest in franchise history; Columbus went 0-7-2 from Dec. 10-26, 2009.

ST. LOUIS
Jori Lehtera scored a natural hat trick for St. Louis with the game’s first three goals and Brian Elliott stayed unbeaten for his career against punchless Buffalo. Joakim Lindstrom had two goals and David Backes also scored for the Blues. Jaden Schwartz assisted on all of Lehtera’s goals and Vladimir Tarasenko had assists on the first two as the Blues’ top line has combined for 25 points the last six games. Alexander Steen also had three assists and Kevin Shattenkirk had two. Tyler Ennis scored his team-leading fifth goal early in the third for the Sabres, held to one or fewer goals for the 11th time in 16 games.

Carey Price made 29 saves for his first shutout of the season. Lars Eller, Alex Galchenyuk and Tomas Plekanec scored for Montreal (11-4-1), which has won three games in a row. Ondrej Pavelec made 24 saves for Winnipeg (8-6-2).

Aleksander Barkov scored and Roberto Luongo made 21 saves as Florida snapped a three-game losing streak. Tomas Fleischmann, Derek MacKenzie and Jimmy Hayes each scored for Florida. Florida has won six of seven against the Sharks. Joe Thornton scored for the Sharks. Antti Niemi had 26 saves.

UNIONDALE, N.Y.
Nick Leddy and Anders Lee scored early and Jaroslav Halak stopped 20 shots for his second straight shutout as New York won its fourth straight win. Travis Hamonic, Nikolay Kulemin, Casey Cizikas and Ryan Strome also scored to help the Islanders get their first home win since Oct. 28. Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov finished with 40 saves.

NEWARK, N.J.
Tuomo Ruutu and Mike Cammalleri scored second-period goals that helped the New Jersey Devils end a four-game losing streak. Travis Zajac sealed the victory with a power-play score into an empty net in the closing seconds. Jaromir Jagr had two assists. Cory Schneider made 23 saves in his 16th straight start.

NASHVILLE, TENN.
Filip Forsberg and Mike Ribeiro each had a goal and an assist to lead Nashville. Matt Cullen also scored for Nashville, winners of three straight. Benoit Pouliot and Nail Yakupov had the goals for Edmonton, which had its two-game winning streak snapped. Edmonton fell to 0-7-1 against fellow Western Conference teams this season. Ribeiro opened the scoring at 2:51 of the first period.
Blackhawks 3, Lightning 2, SO
CHICAGO
Corey Crawford made 25 saves and three more stops in the shootout to lead Chicago. Patrick Kane scored the only goal in the tiebreaker as Chicago won for the third time in four games and stopped Tampa Bay’s six-game winning streak. Brad Richards and Marcus Kruger scored in regulation for the Blackhawks, who have won consecutive home games after dropping three in a row at the United Center.
