Howland battles massive brush fire

HOWLAND

One man was taken into custody for purportedly setting a 4 p.m. Tuesday brush fire near a house at 3548 Birchwood Ave. NE. Birchwood is north of North River Road and west of Elm Road.

Howland firefighters were assisted by seven other departments in extinguishing the fire over a couple of hours.

The fire involved a vehicle and a camper and had taken over an area of about 100 yards by 300 yards, made worse by the wind, Howland firefighters said.

In all, 29 firefighters worked on the fire, including six engines, two rescue trucks, three brush units, two service vehicles and two command vehicles.

The suspect is likely to be arraigned today in Warren Municipal Court.
