Vandalized Ohio juvenile center sprinklers to cost $1M

CLEVELAND (AP) — Costs of replacing vandalized sprinklers at a juvenile justice center in northeast Ohio will total nearly $1 million dollars, according to a list of proposals before county leaders.

Cuyahoga County officials proposed borrowing $966,200 to replace sprinklers at its juvenile justice center after the devices were forcibly triggered 16 times between October 2011 and February 2013, the Northeast Ohio Media Group reported.

The sprinklers were triggered by being struck by shoes or other hard objects, causing $29,000 in water damage. The sprinklers are marketed as being resistant to vandalism.

The sprinkler expense was one item on a list of county renovations, construction projects and furnishings totaling $168 million presented to county council Monday.

The $189 million juvenile detention center opened in 2011.
