Woman with ties to area on ‘Voice’
A California woman with ties to Youngstown is among the top 20 contestants on NBC’s singing competition show “The Voice.”
Sugar Joans, whose real name is Sophia Louise Pizzulo, will perform either tonight or Wednesday on the program.
Joans is the daughter of Joe Pizzulo of Encino, Calif., and the granddaughter of Antoinette “Toni” Pizzulo of Youngstown.
Her father was a singer in the rock band Brainchild, which was popular in the Youngstown area in the late ’60s and early ’70s. An Ursuline High graduate, he moved to California in the 1970s and became the singer for Sergio Mendes in the 1980s.
