The Trumbull Career and Technical Center was one of 29 schools awarded the National High Schools That Work Platinum High Achievement award by the Southern Regional Education Board this summer.

TCTC had a press conference Oct. 21 to announce the award, which it also received last year.

Eight other Ohio high schools also received the designation — Bloom-Carroll High School, Butler Tech Natural Science Center, Cuyahoga Valley Career Center, Massillon Washington High School, Patrick Henry High School, Bellevue High School, Sylvania North High School and Scarlet Oaks Career Development Center.

According to the National High Schools That Work, the criteria for receiving the award are:

At least 85 percent of students met one or more readiness goals.

At least 85 percent of students completed one or more parts of the recommended curriculum.

At least 85 percent of students completed at least one recommended concentration.

At least 50 students (or at least 75 percent of the class if it has fewer than 60 seniors) completed the 2014 HSTW assessment, and the school met state annual yearly progress or had a graduation rate of at least 85 percent in state-reported data.

High Schools That Work is the nation’s largest school-improvement initiative for high-school leaders and teachers, according to the SREB website.

SREB, a nonprofit organization with headquarters in Atlanta, has more than 1,200 High Schools That Work sites in 30 states and the District of Columbia that use the framework of HSTW Goals and Key Practices to raise student achievement and graduation rates, according to SREB.
