Northern Iowa 23, North Dakota State 3
CEDAR FALLS, IOWA
Northern Iowa kept three-time defending FCS champion North Dakota State out of the end zone and handed the Bison their first loss. The loss snapped North Dakota State’s 33-game winning streak, the longest in Football Championship Subdivision history. It also snapped an 18-game Missouri Valley Football Conference win streak. The loss knocked the Bison (9-1, 5-1) into a first-place tie with Illinois State atop the MVFC standings. Northern Iowa (6-4, 4-2) pulled into a tie with Youngstown State for second place. David Johnson rushed for 133 yards on 28 carries to lead Northern Iowa. Brion Carnes finished with 43 yards, including a 6-yard run for a first-quarter touchdown. David Miller scored on a 30-yard run in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. North Dakota State finished with just 175 yards of total offense and was just 1-for-14 in third-down efficiency.
Southern Illinois 32, Missouri State 22
SPRINGFIELD, MO.
Cameron Walter ran for 210 yards, and Southern Illinois snapped a three-game losing streak. SIU (6-4, 3-3 MVFC) took the lead for good at 29-22 on Ryan West’s 36-yard touchdown pass to Tay Willis early in the fourth quarter. Thomas Kinney’s 47-yard field goal made it a 10-point lead with 2:42 left and the Salukis defense held Missouri State to a four-and-out to seal the win. West finished with three touchdown passes, and Willis had eight catches for 95 yards and two touchdowns. Walter carried 37 times, becoming the first Saluki to run for over 200 yards since Deji Karim’s 273 yards against Illinois State in 2009. Missouri State (4-6, 1-5) trailed 22-16 at halftime and pulled even on Marcelo Bonani’s two field goals in third quarter.
South Dakota State 32, Indiana State 17
TERRE HAUTE, IND.
Zach Zenner’s 94-yard touchdown run and Jake Wieneke’s 91-yard catch were highlights as South Dakota State erupted for 25 points after halftime to defeat Indiana State. Trailing by two points, Austin Sumner and Wieneke connected on a slant pass that went for 91 yards and the lead after halftime, tying the longest pass play in school history. Sumner passed for 298 yards and two TDs for South Dakota State (6-4, 3-3 MVFC). Zenner finished with 193 yards, Wieneke with 172 and each scored twice. Indiana State (6-4, 3-3) led 9-7 at halftime when Conlan Cassidy blocked a punt for a safety and Buck Logan followed with a 3-yard TD run on the ensuing drive.
Western Illinois 44, South Dakota 29
VERMILLION, S.D.
Trenton Norvell threw five touchdown passes and Western Illinois pulled away in the second half. Norvell threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Larry Harris and found Hi-C Scott for a 34-yard score to give the Leathernecks a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The Coyotes responded, and the game was tied at 23 at halftime. J.C. Baker ran for 118 on 21 carries to lead Western Illinois (4-6, 2-4 MVFC) on the ground. Kevin Earl threw for 251 yards and two touchdown passes for the Coyotes (2-8, 0-6). His 21-yarder to Eric Shufford Jr. gave South Dakota a 4-point lead in the second quarter.
