BIG TEN CONFERENCE | Saturday’s other games
Michigan 10, Northwestern 9
EVANSTON, ILL.
Howland High School graduate De’Veon Smith ran for a career-high 121 yards and a touchdown, and Michigan beat Northwestern after the Wildcats’ Trevor Siemian slipped attempting a two-point conversion at the end of the game. Siemian had just connected with Tony Jones in the left corner of the end zone on a 3-yard pass to make it a one-point game with three seconds left. Rather than try for the tie, Northwestern went for the win. That plan backfired when Siemian slipped while dropping back as Michigan’s Frank Clark closed in on him. That capped another wild finish between these teams, with Michigan once again prevailing. The Wolverines (5-5, 3-3 Big Ten) won in overtime two years ago and pulled out a triple-OT thriller last year after the field goal unit sprinted onto the field for the tying kick at the end of regulation. Northwestern fell to 3-6, 2-4.
Penn State 13, Indiana 7
BLOOMINGTON, IND.
Sam Ficken kicked a 27-yard go-ahead field goal and Penn State defeated Indiana to snap a four-game skid. Ficken’s kick gave Penn State a 10-7 lead which he later extended with a 28-yard field goal with under a minute to play. Christian Hackenberg was 12 of 29 for 168 yards and Bill Belton ran for 137 yards and a touchdown for the Nittany Lions (5-4, 2-4 Big Ten), who haven’t lost more than five games since 2004. Zander Diamont was 13 of 28 for 68 yards and ran for 58 yards for the Hoosiers (3-6, 0-5), who have lost four straight.
Minnesota 51, Iowa 14
MINNEAPOLIS
Maxx Williams caught three of Mitch Leidner’s four touchdown passes, and Minnesota ran for 291 yards in a romp past Iowa 51-14 on Saturday afternoon to retake the Floyd of Rosedale trophy after a two-year absence.
The Gophers (7-2, 4-1) smothered the Hawkeyes for a season-low 84 yards rushing and swarmed the visitor sideline when it was over to hoist the heavy bronze pig the teams have played for since 1935. They moved back into a first-place tie with idle Nebraska in the Big Ten West Division, with a road game against the Huskers looming in two weeks. Wisconsin is a half-game back, and the Gophers finish this grueling month with a trip to play the Badgers. The Hawkeyes (6-3, 3-2) opened the game with a short touchdown run by Mark Weisman, one of three third-down conversions during that 76-yard drive, but they just rolled over right after that.
