Police search continues for 3 who tried to steal Midlothian ATM
BOARDMAN
Police continue looking for the three men who tried to steal an ATM from the Speedway on Midlothian Boulevard at 3:22 a.m. Friday.
Township Police Chief Jack Nichols said officers responded to an alarm at the store, saw a van nearby and engaged it in a low-speed chase through the Shirley Road area to Buckeye Circle on Youngstown’s South Side.
Two men in the van fled before the vehicle stopped. The driver jumped out a little farther down the road and also ran away. When the driver jumped out, the van bumped into a police cruiser, causing damage to the taillight and tires.
Nichols said the van’s license plate revealed the vehicle had been reported stolen from Cleveland.
Detective Glenn Patton said the first two suspects who fled were both slim black males about 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall. One man wore a gray sweat shirt, a black ski mask and gloves; the other man wore a gray-hooded sweat shirt, a black jacket, a black ski mask and gloves.
Patton said the third suspect fled near Loveland Road in Youngstown. Police said this suspect likely is a 17- to 20-year-old male with a dark complexion, clean shaven and short black hair who is 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall.
Though nothing was stolen from the Speedway, the suspects damaged the shop’s doors, the ATM and a Speedway Rewards terminal inside the building.
Lt. Albert Kakascik said police were to receive a warrant late Friday to search the white cargo van by this morning to retrieve more evidence.
Patton said the suspects face about six felony charges and a misdemeanor charge. He added the incident might tie to one that occurred Oct. 27 in Liberty Township.
“We can’t confirm they relate yet,” he said. “The Liberty Township case was also the theft of an ATM, and the suspects were successful in that incident.”
Nichols said Liberty Township police and detectives have joined the Boardman Police Department to investigate the case. He said to call the Boardman police at 330-726-4150 with any information regarding the Speedway incident.
