“Normal” is a subjective term. “Normal”’ can be different for everybody. But for the Goodman family, “normal” is something only to be wished for. They’d settle for “next to normal.”

“Next to Normal,” a moving modern musical, opened this weekend at the new Dublin Grange Theater.

The Tony and Pulitzer award-winning musical focuses on a family — the Goodmans — dealing with mental illness. It is a poignant and heartbreaking production that explores a subject many would like to ignore.

For 17 years, Diana has been struggling with grief, psychotic episodes and bipolar disorder. Her husband, Dan, tries to support and understand her, while their children have grown up in the shadow of her illness. Around son Gabe’s 18th birthday, they seem to have all reached a breaking point.

Director Liz Conrad and her talented cast have brought this story to life with honesty and bravery.

Brandy Johanntges gives a moving, heartfelt performance as Diana. Johanntges is a gifted performer whose portrayal feels real and raw. Her powerful voice filled the theater and exuded emotion and pain.

Craig Conrad is great as the sturdy, keep-it-together husband. His voice is deep and strong and perfect for the role. Yet it is in the scenes where Dan begins to slowly break that Conrad’s acting ability has a chance to shine through.

As enigmatic son Gabe, Cheney Morgan was passionate and intense. An excellent singer, Morgan moved around the stage with smooth confidence.

Bethany Kholos played daughter Natalie with both determination and fragility. Kholos has a beautiful singing voice and stood out in this cast of power-players.

The performance space in the new Dublin Grange Theater looks small but feels huge. The set design uses all the available space, providing an appropriately intimate feeling. The acoustics are perfect for a musical, filling the room with sound.

“Next to Normal” may not be your “normal” musical theater fare, but its uniqueness and the amazing cast make it a can’t-miss production.

“Next to Normal” continues tonight and Nov. 14, 15, 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 16 at 2:30 p.m. at Dublin Grange Theater, 6571 Fairground Blvd. Call 330-518-4064.
