Ohio man gets 12 years in fatal buggy crash case
CHARDON, Ohio (AP) — A northeast Ohio man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to driving into an Amish buggy, killing one of its occupants and injuring three others.
Douglas Learn, 43, was sentenced in Geauga County Common Pleas Court on Thursday. Authorities say Learn crashed his SUV into the back of a buggy carrying a family of five in the village of Burton in late March and kept going.
He pleaded guilty in September to aggravated vehicular homicide, aggravated vehicular assault, operating a vehicle while under the influence and other charges.
Joseph Byler, 28, died at a hospital after the crash. His mother and two sisters were injured.
Learn also received a lifetime driver’s license suspension and must pay $9,000 in fines.
