Area residents got an education in saving money from couponing expert Rachel Krych on Oct. 18 at the Boardman library.
“We are talking about how to save money by using coupons,” she said. “I was here last week. I had a couponing 101 class. This one is called shopping at the stores. I cover more in-depth things, like how to shop at specific stores, Walgreens, CVS, Aldi, and how to save even more money. Most of the people who came last week will be able to dive right in and get some more nitty-gritty stuff.”
Krych had 21 people sign up for the two-hour class. She said she’s been couponing for about a decade.
“I have a blog called Couponing with Rachel,” she said. “I started couponing about 10 years ago. I was a stay at home mom and we went from two incomes to one, which is not as much fun. Over the years we’ve added three kids, so I knew something had to change. I discovered the world of couponing, and what’s nice is you don’t have to be an extreme couponer to get extreme savings.”
During the class, Krych taught how to navigate her blog. She said she does all the work for people. Krych goes out and finds the deals and does match ups, which means she goes through the weekly sales ads and matches up what sales there are and lists the coupons. She also spoke about how to find the best deals by stacking coupons.
“I don’t teach extreme couponing techniques, I teach people how to save money for their family and I encourage people to donate,” she said. “I tell people to buy what they need and donate the rest.”
One of the attendees was Sue Gentile of Youngstown. She said she knows a little about Krych but was looking for more information.
“I coupon and I wanted some tips on how I can use them better,” she said. “It’ll give me some more websites to look at, and [Krych] has some stuff on her website and her blog and Facebook page, so that’ll help. She does a lot of the work and all I have to do is go on her site and coupon from there. I just print them up and go.”
Krych said in today’s economy, money-saving and couponing techniques are more important than ever.
“In today’s economy, everybody needs to save a little bit of money,” she said. “My family likes to go out and do different things, so we like to save money so we can move that extra money to do fun stuff. No matter where you are, it’s always great to save.”
