A night of marching percussion

The Boardman band and BHS drumline present the second annual Boardman Drum Night on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Glenwood Middle School Gymnasium. Drum sections representing seven area high school bands and Youngstown State University will perform drum cadences and percussion features in much the same format as entire marching bands would at a local band night. Lines from Austintown Fitch, Campbell Memorial, Champion, Howland, Lowellville, Springfield and Boardman High Schools, as well as the YSU Drumline will perform. At the conclusion of the BHS Drumline’s performance at Drum Night, all eight drumlines in attendance will combine in a “drum jam.” Admission at the door is $2 for adults and $1 for students. Senior citizens are admitted free of charge. Glenwood Middle School is located at 7635 Glenwood Ave., directly north of Boardman High School. The gymnasium entrance is at the southwest area of the building.

Local elementary to have Veteran’s Day event

The students and staff at West Boulevard Elementary School would like to welcome you to the annual Veteran’s Day Luncheon and Program on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.

Mockingjay Crossword Challenge

There will be a Monckingjay Crossword Challenge during regular library hours throughout November at the Boardman library. All correct crossword entries will be eligible for a movie gift card drawing on Nov. 21, just in time for the release of the Hunger Games movie, Mockingjay, Part 1. May the odds be ever in your favor. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.

A force to be reckoned with

Veterans Day is a fitting celebration on which to explore the records of our armed forces. Learn how to pursue personnel files and unit histories in order to understand your ancestor’s role in defending our nation’s heritage on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library. This event is for adults.

Eat smart, live strong

Did you know that with just a few simple changes in your diet, you can make every day meals healthy and delicious? Join the Boardman library for a program that explores making smart food choices on Nov. 20 at 10 a.m.

Presented by registered and licensed dietician, Agapi Mantos, Park Vista of Youngstown employee who also teaches nutrition at Youngstown State University. Reservations are needed for these programs. Refreshments will be provided. This event is for adults.

Blood Drive

There will be a Blood Drive by the Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross to serve the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital on Nov. 28 from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. Taking blood donations to help our community. For appointments, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Sensory story time

Join the Boardman library for a family story time for children of all ages with a sensory focus on Nov. 15 at 2 p.m.

This program is designed for children with different needs, including those with Autism, speech/language delays, cognitive impairments, AD/HD and other special needs and challenges. We will enjoy books, music and sensory stations with a schedule board and double visuals.

School’s Out: four flying toys

Up, up and away with stories and flying toys to make and fly at the Boardman library Air Show. This family program for all ages will take place on Nov. 26 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. It will last one hour. Preschoolers must attend with an adult.

Night Owl story time

Night Owl is an evening story time for children ages 3-5. It will take place on Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. at the Boardman library. Each child must be accompanied by an adult in this 30 minute program featuring finger plays, stories and a craft activity.

Fun Time for 4s and 5s

Join the Boardman library for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader every Tuesday in November at 10 a.m.

Two Boardman elementaries honored by the state

Robinwood Lane Elementary and West Boulevard Elementary have both been awarded the honor of “High Performing School of Honor” from the Ohio Department of Education.

This is the third time that Robinwood Lane has received this award. In addition, West Boulevard was also named as a “School of Promise.” Both of these programs look at proficiency in reading and math for all student groups.

These awards were given based on the 2014 Ohio School Report Card. The Schools or Honor program looks at schools with a high percentage of students from economically disadvantaged homes and tracks the performance of all students in these areas for the five most recent years.

By showing consistent progress in raising math and reading skills for all student groups, the schools have proved that administrators, teachers and families who have high expectations and provide continual support can enable students from all backgrounds to achieve academically. Robinwood Lane Principal, Don Robinson, and West Boulevard Principal, Al Cervello both received letters from Dr. Richard Ross, Superintendent of Public Instruction, and will receive banners from the Ohio Department of Education to display in their buildings.

Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Boardman library for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader Nov. 12 and 19 at 10 a.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with Babies and Books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be twenty minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs, and stories, followed by time to play and socialize on Nov. 15 and 21 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Fundraiser for children

On Nov. 9 from 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 12-5 p.m., Beautiful Creations Hair and Nail salon will be hosting a fundraiser to benefit the children of the Mahoning valley Rescue Mission. Founded in 1893, the rescue mission stands ready to enable, encourage and equip anyone in need. They transform the lives of not only the homeless but anyone in need of food, shelter, safety and a second chance. This is done mainly through the generous donations and support of the community and local businesses. They are asking local businesses for any donations to help raise money to make a difference in the lives of the people in our very own community. There will be free services, including dry cuts and styling, mini manicures and pedicures and a massage. You can get a spray tan for $10. All proceeds will go to the children of the Mahoning Valley Rescue Missions. All staff members will be donating 100 percent of time and proceeds.

Joanie’s Sisters to address cancer and spirituality

Dr. Jacquelyn E. Bailey, director of Community Outreach and Patient Navigation at the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute, will discuss spirituality for cancer patients and cancer survivors during the next meeting of Joanie’s Sisters in Support Sorority. The meeting, slated for Nov. 19 from 6-7:30 p.m., takes place at the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center, located at 1044 Belmont Ave. in Youngstown. It is open to all women affected by breast or ovarian cancer – newly diagnosed as well as long-term survivors – and a guest. YWCA offers free preschool

The YWCA of Youngstown has received a grant from the Ohio Department of Education to provide free preschool to eligible families. Families below 100 percent of the federal poverty line will qualify for free preschool. Families between 100 percent and 200 percent of the FPL will qualify on a sliding scale fee basis. The child must not have ever received any local, state or federal childcare funding and must be age 3 or 4 or not yet age eligible for Kindergarten. The ODE preschool hours at the YWCA are 9-11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. Breakfast and lunch are not included. The YWCA is also now enrolling for CDI Headstart. CDI Headstart hours are 8:30 a.m. until noon, Monday through Thursday. CDI Headstart provides free preschool for 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds who are income eligible. Reversing memory loss seminar

MCCTC’s Horticulture Club poinsettia fundraiser

The Horticulture FFA Club at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center is taking orders for red poinsettias for the upcoming holiday season. The plants are single, pinched (multiple bloom) in a 6.5 inch pot. You have your choice of green, red or gold foil for around the pot and you can also add a white, green or a red satin bow. The poinsettias will be ready for pick-up starting Nov. 20 and the sale will go until Dec. 17. The cost of the plants is $8.50. Of Mast and Men: The Life, Times and Demise of the Passenger Pigeon

Harvey Webster, Director of Wildlife Resources at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, will present “Of Mast and Men: The Life, Times, and Demise of the Passenger Pigeon” on Nov. 8 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. The Passenger Pigeon was thought to be the most numerous species of bird on earth, accounting for 25 percent of all birds in North America. Frontier descriptions of flock size defy imagination. Flocks darkened the skies for days on end in migration. Nesting colonies could occupy 50 square miles.

MetroMutts: Understanding Play

Understanding Play will be presented by The Learning Dog at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Nov. 9 from 10:30 a.m. until noon. Play is a vital component of a dog’s life, but sometimes, play can seem rough, or not like play at all. Dogs signal during play and offer lots of postures to ensure play remains play. Often times, knowing how to read play signals will help you to know when to intervene.

Twenty thousand steps in Mill Creek Park

If you’re under 6 foor 4 inches tall, you’ll take about 20,000 steps on this hike on Nov. 9 from 1-5 p.m. starting at Ford Nature Center. The shorter you are, the more steps you’ll take. Don’t be intimidated, though: no hiker will be left behind. This hike has a difficult rating.

Autumn fun day at the Farm

Join members of the 4-H Unlimited Club for autumn games, crafts and activities to celebrate this special time of year on Nov. 9 from 2-4 p.m. at the MetroPakrks Farm. There will be a small fee for some activities and fall theme crafts.

Fused glass ornaments

Poinsettia painting course

Students will explore this wonderful flower from an artistic point on Nov. 12 and 19 from 6:30-9 p.m. Live poinsettias will be provided to work from. Marianne Hilke will show you how to see your subject from start to finish. Bring a camera to copy your set-up, continue to work from your photograph the second week. Finishing with a history of a favorite botanical artist and their work. Note: you can paint in any medium you are familiar with, demonstration done in oils. The cost is $28; FFRG member $24.

Radical roots

This event, for ages 3–5, will take place on Nov. 13 from 1-2 p.m. at Fellows Riverside Gardens. Roots are very important parts of plants and some are tasty, too. Learn about different edible roots, snack on some, plus make your own harvest bag with root prints. The cost is $7.

MetroMutts: Hike – turkey trot

It’s almost Thanksgiving – will the turkeys be in hiding? Find out on Nov. 23 from 11 a.m. until noon as you take a loop around the Ford Nature Center to see if you can find the resident flock, then take a walk on East Cohasset Drive. Animal Charity will be on hand with some of their adoptables. This hike has an easy rating of 2 miles.

There are different ways that animals, including ourselves, survive the cold winter months. Explore this topic in the rugged and scenic Bears Den Area on Nov. 23 from 2-4 p.m. Call Ford Nature Center for details. This hike has a moderate rating of 2 miles.

Gather your family and friends around your Thanksgiving table with this fresh centerpiece. Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley: birding by habitat

Cheryl Harner of the Greater Mohican Audubon Society and Richland County Master Gardeners will group birds by habitat and highlight some of the best plants and places for specific species on Nov. 25 from 7-8 p.m. at the MetroParks Farm. Once birders consider the plant life associated with the bird they’d like to see, it’s easier to find the most desirable birds or even attract them to your yard.

Olde Fashioned Christmas at Lanterman’s Mill

Lanterman’s Mill will be festively decorated for this traditional event on the last open weekend of 2014. HMHP offers free ‘Health at Home’ workshop

Humility of Mary Health Partners will offer a one-hour workshop titled Health at Home on Nov. 13 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, located at 8401 Market Street in Boardman.

The workshop includes an easy-to-use reference guide that provides information about more than 200 common health problems as well as tips on caring for yourself and your family, preventing illness and injury, and advice on when to seek medical attention. The morning session runs from 11 a.m. until noon in the Willow Room and the evening session runs from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

YWCA invites artists to participate in art sale

The YWCA of Youngstown is inviting artists to participate in an Early Bird Art Sale before Black Friday. The sale will be from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Nov. 22 and 23 at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The YWCA is providing an opportunity for all artists – men and women – to sell their artwork at a pre-holidays art sale. The cost is $10 per table. The YWCA will retain a 20 percent commission on all art sales. All artwork must be priced $100 or less. Artwork does not need to be framed. Proceeds will be used to purchase lighting for the Women Artists Annual Art Exhibition. Artists under 18 will need a parent or guardian to reserve the table. Ladies Night Out to be Nov. 13

Local church to have turkey dinner

Friends of Fido and Legacy Dog Rescue announce Night at the Races

Friends of Fido and Legacy Dog Rescue will hosting a Night at the Races on Nov. 15 at the St. Maron Church Antioch Hall, located at 1555 S. Meridian in Youngstown. National College announces Dean’s List

National College in Youngstown and the American National University online program released the Dean’s List for the second spring term. The following students, from Boardman, earned a minimum grade point average of 3.5 out of a possible 4.0, and thus achieved the honor and privilege of being placed on the Dean’s List: Janet Pippin.

Preschool now accepting new students

The Potential Development Preschool is now accepting applications for new students. The Preschool is an early childhood special education center that focuses on working with children ages 2 1/2 - 6 years-old who have behavioral problems, developmental delays and/or Autism Spectrum Disorder. Students enrolled at Potential Development benefit from low teacher to student ratios, an extended school year that runs through the end of July, on site speech and occupational therapy services, more than 60 years of experience in working with children with special needs and weekly Gymsters classes. The preschool program is licensed by the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services and participates in the Step Up to Quality program (SUTQ), a voluntary quality rating system for early care and education programs. The school is 1 of 6 preschools in Mahoning County to receive a Four-Star Rating from SUTQ out of a possible Five Stars. The Boardman High School class of 1965 has begun making plans for their 50th class reunion on Aug. 29, 2015. The committee is looking for current addresses of classmates. Donate to the stadium project and win

The Boardman Booster Club has paired up with Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC to offer a car raffle in an effort to raise funds for the stadium project. Sweeney has donated a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox for the fundraiser. Sweeney Chevrolet Buick GMC also made a donation of $50,000 to the stadium project. Fans can buy tickets at any of the school’s athletic events or marquee events from now until Nov. 1. The giveaway will take place at the Boardman Band concert on Nov. 1. Patrons may purchase a ticket for $10 or three tickets for $25. The giveaway is for a two year lease and 10,000 miles per year.
