With many programs for younger children, the Austintown library started a monthly program for tweens in September. The most recent event was on Oct. 6 with an event called Minecraft is Your Craft.

“We started a tween program for grades 4-6,” assistant supervisor Starr Jones said. “A lot of little kids come to preschool story time and toddler time and baby time. Once they hit around elementary school, they get busy with homework and sports and they don’t come to the library as much, so we want to have programs that will bring the older kids in and give them something fun and interesting to do.”

There were six children and four adults at the event. Each child was given a piece of paper with pictures of various Minecraft characters, such as Steve, the Creeper, the Diamond, as well as various swords that are used in the game.

Then, they applied different colored Perler beads onto a grid to duplicate whichever character they chose. After that was done, Jones used an iron to melt the beads and have them stick together, allowing the children to remove the beads from the grid.

“Apparently, all kids love Minecraft, so we were trying to incorporate that into a program, so this is build your own Minecraft pieces,” Jones said.

Jones said the event is a good one to get children to come to the library.

“[They’ll have] a fun time at the library,” she said. “It’s good to get them in the door to have a time to do something with other kids, and hopefully they’ll get their library cards if they haven’t already and check out some books while they’re here.”
