NY troopers say man tried to eat DWI test results
PORT CHESTER, N.Y.
A 40-year-old man is facing multiple charges after New York state police say he tried to eat his DWI test results.
Troopers say Kenneth Desormes, of Greenwich, Conn., was stopped for speeding on Interstate 95 at 5:30 a.m. Sunday.
After speaking with him, the troopers determined he was intoxicated and arrested him.
Desormes was transported to the state police barracks in Tarrytown to be processed. Troopers say when his breath-test results were printing, Desormes grabbed the paperwork and tried to eat it.
Desormes is charged with driving while intoxicated, obstructing governmental administration and criminal tampering.
Troopers have not released information as to whether he was remanded to jail, released with an appearance ticket, or released on bail or bond.
Los Angeles Zoo sees first hippo birth in 26 years
LOS ANGELES
The Los Angeles Zoo received a real treat for Halloween — the birth of its first hippopotamus in 26 years.
It was a bit of trick, too, because the mother was on birth control.
The zoo says the baby was born Friday. It was somewhat of a surprise, but staffers had noticed the mother hippo gained weight, which made them suspect she was pregnant.
Vets haven’t determined the sex of the new hippo. But they say the baby appears to be doing well and is bonding with mom.
Media got to see the newborn Tuesday in its public debut.
The mother, 10-year-old Mara, came to the zoo in December from Topeka, Kan. The father is a 3-year-old named Adhama, who arrived from the San Diego Zoo last year.
TSA finds cannon barrel in Maui traveler’s luggage
HONOLULU
An airline passenger flying out of Maui checked in with a weapon not often seen in baggage — the barrel of a cannon.
Transportation Security Administration officials confirm they spotted the cannon barrel recently in the checked luggage of a passenger at Kahului Airport.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the cannon barrel was found Oct. 20 in the checked bag of a United Airlines passenger traveling to San Francisco on a late-evening flight.
The cannon wasn’t loaded.
The TSA says the passenger was cleared to fly, but the airline made separate arrangements for transporting the cannon barrel.
