YOUNGSTOWN

Local grass-roots efforts continue to raise awareness of 3-D printing technology and additive manufacturing to students.

The Youngstown Business Incubator and Inventor Cloud, a member of America Makes, participated in the Youngstown Phantoms’ “Hockey for Health” event Wednesday, which displayed informational materials and the actual technology for students.

The displays also were incorporated into live video updates projected on the center’s ice-video display throughout the game.

“We’re here as part of the Youngstown maker community,” said Brittany Housel, the client- development coordinator for YBI.

The Phantoms hosted about 1,000 students for a special 10:30 a.m. hockey game with lobby displays, time-out promotions and announcements, and between- period events to encourage students to focus on nutrition, physical activity, citizenship, finance and education.

“It’s an opportunity to display the 3-D printer for kids,” said Julie Michael Smith, executive vice president of Inventor Cloud. “I don’t know who is more excited: the parents or the kids.”

Smith said they will participate again in the Phantoms’ next “Hockey for Health” game Dec. 3.

America Makes, formerly the National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Institute, is the national institute for 3-D printing technology development in Youngstown. It is based at 436 W. Boardman St. downtown.
