An extra Weathersfield Township police officer was on hand Monday at Mineral Ridge High School after a student made a threatening remark to another student Sunday.

Schools Superintendent Damon Dohar said there were no incidents in school Monday, and a regular schedule of classes is planned today.

The student making the threatening remark was not in school Monday, and the school’s investigation of the matter is likely to be complete by today, Dohar added.

Holiday open house

Items stolen at party

More than $10,000 worth of items were reported stolen from a Halloween party in the 8500 block of Twin Oaks Court over the weekend.

An Xbox game console, numerous game controllers, a Panasonic 3-D DVD player, a Sony PlayStation 4, a suitcase belonging to a guest, a North Face backpack and men’s hiking shoes were among the stolen items, the total of which was estimated at $10,565, according to a police report.

The gaming items belonged to the owner of the house. The other items belonged to guests at a Halloween party Saturday.

The host of the party said a group of uninvited guests showed up, and he believes they might have been involved in the theft.

Breakfast at farm

CANFIELD

To help the public better understand agricultural economics, the Mahoning County Farm Bureau has scheduled a “Farmer’s Share Breakfast” for 7:30 a.m. Nov. 15 at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road.

The cost is 50 cents, and the menu consists of pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, milk and coffee.

Attendees will be able to talk directly with farmers and learn how fluctuating commodity, property and food prices affect farmers’ incomes.

All proceeds will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley. Canned goods, nonperishable items and additional monetary donations also are welcome.

Testing weather sirens

HERMITAGE, PA.

The Hermitage Fire Department will conduct its monthly test of the Shenango Valley weather-warning sirens at 10 a.m. Thursday. The test will include activation of the Clark, Farrell, Sharpsville, Shenango Township, West Middlesex and Wheatland weather sirens. Residents are asked to disregard the sirens during this test.

Gun, OVI charges

While investigating a vehicle that went off the road on Southern Boulevard on Saturday night, officers discovered a man passed out at the wheel with a loaded handgun on his person, according to a police report.

Township police arrested Allen Beale, 38, of Wildwood Drive, after an officer observed Beale passed out in the driver’s seat while the vehicle was still in drive, near Maple Drive.

Officers then found a loaded handgun in Beale’s waistband.

Beale was issued citations for operating a vehicle impaired, operating a vehicle impaired over 0.08 blood-alcohol content and failure to control. He was arrested on a felony charge of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle.

He posted bond and is set to appear in court today.

Trumbull program No. 1

The Trumbull County Probate Court’s Guardian Angels Volunteer Guardian Program has been identified by Atty. General Mike DeWine as the top volunteer guardian program in Ohio. DeWine identified it as No. 1 in a letter to all Ohio probate judges, according to Trumbull County Probate Judge Thomas A. Swift.

Guardian Angel volunteers monitor the wards of the court and give friendship to people who are elderly and alone in Trumbull County through personal visits.

Standoff situation

A man was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center to be evaluated after police responded to a home in the 200 block of West Dennick Avenue on the North Side about 2:45 p.m. Monday for a report of a man inside with a gun.

Police originally were called for an argument with a gun but when they found the man inside, they called for additional units and several cars responded. Officers surrounded the home, and after about a half-hour they were able to persuade the man to give up. He did have a weapon with him, a police spokeswoman said.

The man was led to the ambulance in handcuffs, but it is unclear if any charges were filed. His name was not released.

Block-watch meeting

The Bryn Mawr (East Side) Block Watch will have its monthly meeting at 5 p.m. today at McGuffey Centre, 1649 Jacobs Road. The organization will welcome guest speakers from the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corp. during the meeting, as well as discuss neighborhood issues regarding trash, tires and empty homes on the East Side. Meetings are open to the public; East Side residents in particular are encouraged to attend.
