Alex Grantonic, son of Matt and Colleen Grantonic of New Middletown, has earned his Eagle Scout rank, Boy Scouting’s highest award. Grantonic is a member of Troop 49 at the Free Methodist Church in New Middletown. His father is the troop’s assistant Scoutmaster.
Grantonic joined Cub Scouts with Pack 119 at Petersburg Presbyterian Church as a Tiger cub and advanced through the ranks. He earned Cub Scouting’s highest honor, the Arrow of Light, in 2008.
For his Eagle Scout service project, Grantonic put a recycling program in place for Springfield Local Baseball Association, where he has played baseball for eight years.
He sold advertising plaques to purchase bins for the baseball complex. Individuals and business leaders in the community donated funds to purchase 16 industrial recycling containers placed around the complex. This has helped keep bottles out of the landfill and reduced the Springfield baseball trash fee.
Grantonic has earned 46 merit badges, including the 50-miler award, Greater Western Reserve 100 nights camping award, the Historic Trails award, and Camp Seven Ranges 5-year Pipestone honor. He also is a member of Wapashuwi Lodge 56, Order of the Arrow.
He attended the National Jamboree in 2013, and he has more than 110 hours of community service. He has had troop positions of senior patrol leader, patrol leader, quartermaster and scribe.
Grantonic is a senior at Springfield Local High School, where he is member of the varsity golf team, marching band, drama club, ski club, and 4-H trap shooting team at the New Middletown Sportsman Club. He is a member of St. Paul’s Church in New Middletown.
