Services recognizing veterans are planned at area churches.

Beloit Evangelical Friends Church, 18042 Fifth St., Beloit: John L. Haigh Sr., former chief steward on Air Force One, will be guest speaker for the Veterans and Heroes Service at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 9. He grew up in a small coal-mining community in western Pennsylvania and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He had his first experience on Air Force One during the Nixon administration in 1973. His missions included a 33-day presidential good-will trip around the world with the Apollo 17 astronauts, the prime minister of India; premier of China; chancellor of Germany; president of Turkey; Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip; President Carter’s mother; cabinet-level officers; members of congress; high ranking military officers; Vice Presidents Ford and Mondale. Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main St., Canfield: The 11th annual Veterans Day service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 in the sanctuary. A light lunch will follow in fellowship hall.

Disciples Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 565 Boardman-Canfield Road, Boardman: Military personnel and veterans will be honored at the 10 a.m. Nov. 9 worship service.

New Waterford United Methodist Church, 46925 S. State St., New Waterford: Special Veterans Day service at 10:45 a.m. Nov. 16 to honor veterans past and present. A ceremony will recognize 33 World War I veterans listed on one of four stained-glass windows, which were presented to the church in 1921.
