SBC’s Salinas headlines nine-bout boxing card

Seven boxers will make their professional debuts in the nine-bout card “The Beginning” on Nov. 29 at St. Lucy’s Banquet Center on 394 Tenney Ave.
Alejandro “Popo” Salinas will headline the card in his first pro fight following a decorated amateur career.
Other fighters making their pro debut are middleweight Victor Toney, heavyweight Wesley Triplett and welterweights Lavelle Hadley and John Gregory, all from the Southside Boxing Club.
Heavyweight Tony Mercado (Burnside Boxing Club) and Syrano Clay (Buckeye Elks Boxing Club) are also making their pro debuts.
Also on the card will be veteran and local favorite Vinny Oniell and Brett Simmons also out of the Southside Boxing Club.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the first fight is at 7:30. Tickets are $25 for general admission and $50 for ringside and are available at the Southside Boxing Club (1714 Market St ) or by calling 330-501-5713 or 330-501-0882.
YSU volleyball rallies past UIC
YOUNGSTOWN
Youngstown State senior volleyball player Shannon Watson had 13 of her career-high 18 kills in the final two sets, and the Penguins rallied to beat UIC in four sets on Friday evening at Beeghly Center. The set scores were 17-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-22.
Watson’s 18 kills came on a .485 attack percentage, and she tied for match-high honors with six blocks. YSU hit .250 as a team, including .294 over the final three sets. Lexi Egler added 13 kills, and Sam Brown posted 10. Setter Val Jeffery posted 41 assists and seven kills, and Nikki Thompson registered 14 digs.
YSU women’s soccer falls in finale at UIC
CHICAGO
The Youngstown State women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Horizon League foe UIC on Friday evening and earned the fifth seed in the upcoming Horizon League Championship.
The Penguins (7-8-2, 3-4-1 Horizon League) will play at fourth-seeded Green Bay in Monday’s first round.
UIC’s Jessica Belsito scored the match’s only goal at the 52:05 mark when she lifted a shot from 20 yards out over the outstretched arms of YSU goalkeeper Katie Montgomery.
Untapable wins Breeders’ Cup Distaff
ARCADIA, Calif.
Untapable polished off an impressive year with a 1 1/4-length victory Friday in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, with a pregnant Rosie Napravnik becoming the first female jockey to win the $2 million race in its 31-year history.
Napravnik stunned the crowd at Santa Anita and a national television audience by announcing she will retire Sunday. The 26-year-old jockey said she and husband Joe Sharp, who is a trainer, are starting a family. Later, she confirmed she is seven weeks pregnant.
Napravnik has four mounts from the nine Breeders’ Cup races on Saturday.
She won her first race in June 2005 and became the first woman to win the Kentucky Oaks with Believe You Can in 2012. She and Untapable teamed to win the Oaks in May. Napravnik joined Julie Krone as the only female riders to win a Cup race.
Cavaliers sign Varejao to contract extension
CLEVELAND
Best known for his wild hair and hustle, Anderson Varejao’s heart and hard work got him a new contract with the Cavaliers.
Cleveland signed its starting center to a contract extension on Friday. The sides had been discussing a three-year, $30 million contract.
Varejao was in the final year of a six-year contract he signed in 2008. He’s making $9.7 million this season and would have been eligible to become a free agent this summer before the Cavs decided to lock him up for a few more seasons.
The 32-year-old Varejao has played in 535 games with Cleveland, averaging 7.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. The Brazilian has appeared in a franchise-record tying 71 postseason games.
