Bears Den, New Cross, Cross and West drives in Mill Creek Park will be closed to vehicular traffic as well as cyclists and pedestrians from approximately 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday for the Run Against Amyloidosis 5K at Mill Creek’s Wick Recreation Area. Fire damages home

YOUNGSTOWN

A fire at a 1001 Glenwood Ave. home on the South Side caused about $6,000 in damage Wednesday.

Crews were called to the home about 3:30 p.m. after an off-duty firefighter passing by saw the home on fire. The flames were contained to a back bedroom, reports said.

The occupants told investigators they are in the process of moving out of the home, reports said. Reports said a space heater in that room appears to have started the fire, and the occupants said the plug it was plugged into has been sparking and popping. No one was injured.

Three face charges

CAMPBELL

Three residents of the 100 block of Tremble Avenue will appear in Campbell Municipal Court at 9 a.m. Friday on breaking-and-entering charges.

Charged with the fifth-degree felony are Matthew C. Higinbotham, 36; Lisa M. Lagese, 42; and Jason L. Ostavitz, 21. Police arrested the three shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday for unlawfully being in a vacant home in the 100 block of Gordon Avenue.

The home showed signs of forced entry, including broken glass and wood shavings near the door. Higinbotham, Lagese and Ostavitz are in Mahoning County jail without bond until their court appearance.

Man, 35, arrested

CAMPBELL

Police arrested a 35-year-old city man Wednesday afternoon on a host of charges, including obstructing official business and resisting arrest, after a traffic stop for a cracked windshield and the driver’s lack of a seat belt.

Officers stopped Jason Carnahan of Gordon Avenue about 2 p.m. on 12th Street. According to police, Carnahan immediately became enraged, then began to drive away. Eventually, he pulled into the police-station parking lot and approached the cruiser, yelling obscenities and ignoring requests from police.

Officers had to use force to get Carnahan into the police station and its holding room.

Carnahan is charged with disorderly conduct, obstructing official business and resisting arrest, and also was cited for multiple traffic offenses. He is set to appear in Campbell Municipal Court at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Closing changed

LEETONIA

The Norfolk Southern Railroad has changed the closing date for the crossings in Leetonia. The closing date is Monday, and the work should start about 9 a.m. Two or more crossings may be closed at a time due to the length of the equipment being used. It will take several hours to unload the new track because of the length of the train.
