Neighbors | Submitted .Michael “Mickey” Marshall, son of Daniel and Cari Marshall of Boardman.will be serving as an intern for Congressman Steve Stivers (R – Columbus) this summer in Washington DC.

Michael “Mickey” Marshall, son of Daniel and Cari Marshall of Boardman, received a phone call from Congressman Steve Stivers’ office on April 23 asking if he could be in Washington, D.C. by June 1 to serve as an intern. Marshall accepted the unpaid internship and is on his way to making it happen.

Marshall started his freshman year at Ohio University in Athens in September of 2013. He was accepted into the prestigious Honors Tutorial College majoring in English with a minor in Political Science. He has a 3.9 GPA and is currently a sophomore by hours. Marshall intends to attend law school and would like to pursue career in politics.

Congressman Stivers’ office has told him that his duties as an intern will include possibly attending Congressional Committee meetings, answering constituent phone calls and follow-up on their inquiries as well as various office services. Stivers serves on the Financial Services Committee, which oversees the banking, insurance, real estate, public and assisted housing and securities industries. Members who serve on the committee also work on housing and consumer protection legislation and oversee Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Federal Reserve Bank.

Marshall was awarded the Gateway Excellence Scholarship to Ohio University. He is an active member of the Students Defending Students organization at Ohio University. In high school, Marshall participated in the American Legion’s Buckeye Boys State where he was honored with an Outstanding Citizen Award. He was the Boardman High School debate team captain and a National Merit Scholar commended student in 2013. He also participated in the Model U.N. at Youngstown State University for four years.

As the internship is unpaid, all living and transportation expenses are the responsibility of the intern. Most Congressional offices do not set aside any money in their office budgets to supplement the interns’ costs. Marshall would appreciate any local individuals, civic organizations, or other entities that would like to contribute toward his expenses. Any contributions can be sent to his home, located at 91 Sugarcane Dr., Boardman, OH 44512.
