MCCTC students bring home honors


Students in the Culinary Arts and Early Childhood Development programs at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center received high honors at the FCCLA State Leadership Conference in Columbus.

Seniors Cierra Duvall of Springfield and Starla Sharp of South Range earned first place and a gold medal in the early childhood team event. The students also earned $6,000 scholarships to Sullivan University. Junior Stephanie Liversage of Springfield earned a bronze medal in the recycle and redesign event.

In the culinary competition, the senior team received a gold medal rating and placed fourth out of 22 teams. The students also earned $500 each in scholarships to Sullivan University. Members of the senior team are Ron Djubek of Austintown, Kaitlyn Graber of West Branch, Tristen Belt of West Branch and Kelsie Hopton of Austintown.

The junior culinary team also had an impressive showing, earning a silver medal rating at the competition and placing in the top ten. Members of the junior team are Zana Barnett of Campbell, Kyla Gilchrist of Austintown, Brittany Kaminsky of Austintown and Stephanie Markovich of Poland.

The culinary students are led by instructor Matt Putzier and the early childhood education students are led by Instructor Julie Pagnotta.
