In celebration of Mothers Day, the Cornersburg Dairy Queen, located at at 3555 South Meridian Road, hosted a cake decorating event on May 10.

“I actually came up with it many years ago,” said Cornersburg Dairy Queen owner Christine Smith. “I know it’s been copied by many Dairy Queens and some other bakeries. I always thought it would be fun to get little kids to write on their own cakes because everybody makes a picture for their mother for Mothers Day. This way they can use the canvas of the cake to draw.”

Smith said she expected to sell 50 cakes for the event, which ranged from $19.99 for an 8 inch cake up to $27.99 for a sheet cake.

Once a cake was purchased, children could decorate it with sprinkles, icing, jell or ribbons. They could either do it by themselves or with the help of a Dairy Queen employee.

“I think we’ve had a pretty good crowd today,” Smith said. “I’ve been pretty pleased.”

Lynn Shodd of Canfield attended along with her daughters Kalleigh and Khloe.

“My mom actually told us about it, so we came out for the chance for them to get to do this,” Lynn said. “It’s nice. We’ve come before. The girls have had a lot of fun. They enjoy decorating cakes and baking so this is perfect for them.”

Smith said children and their parents have a good time during the event.

“We take all the kids’ pictures so we can put it on their Facebook page,” she said. “Whether they come in to do it with mom as a special time together or they can do it as a special surprise. We see a lot of dads here, too.”
