Street improvement contracts awarded

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning County commissioners awarded contracts for two street- improvement projects.

At their meeting Wednesday, they awarded the $66,491 resurfacing project on 14th Street in Campbell to R.T. Vernal Paving and Excavating Inc. of North Lima.

The other award was a $45,700 contract to J.S. Northeast Co. of Girard for phase two of the Pickering Street improvement in Milton Township.

Both projects are funded by the federal Community Development Block Grant.

The commissioners also recognized winners among 863 entries in the county recycling division’s annual poster contest, in which students use a recycling or anti-litter theme.

The first-place winners in each grade are: Dominic Navarro, first grade, Western Reserve Elementary School; Andrew Richards, second grade, and Chance Cooper, third grade, both at West Boulevard Elementary School, Boardman; Cailin Fowler, fourth grade, Stadium Drive Elementary School, Boardman; Jordan Ramun, fifth grade, Lowellville K-12 School; Shanice St. Thomas, sixth grade, St. Nicholas School, Struthers; Anson Hankey, seventh grade, St. Christine School, Youngstown; and Bailey Snyder, eighth grade, West Branch Middle School.

All first-place posters appear on place mats for use at local restaurants and nonprofit organizations.
