A Hubbard High School graduate who appeared on the talk show “Katie” on Friday came away the winner of an $11,000 scholarship.

Ryan Bosela, 19, who graduated in 2013 from Hubbard and from Trumbull County Career and Technical Center, was one of 12 finalists who appeared on the show, hosted by Katie Couric. The finalists each won scholarships that are a part of the Scholarship America Dream Award.

There were 2,700 applicants.

“Don’t ask me how I did it, ’cause I don’t even know,” he said Tuesday.

The awards are between $5,000 and $15,000 each year, beginning in the second year of up to a five-year program.

Bosela will begin his second year this fall at the Pittsburgh Technical Institute, a two-year, private, for-profit school, where he is working toward a drafting degree.

Bosela said he will receive his award in two installments, one in August and one in December.

Bosela flew to New York the day before the show for the taping, but did not know he and the others would all be winning scholarships.

He said show representatives told them there would be only one winner.

Couric is a founder and sponsor of the award.

Bosela said he plans to use his degree for a career in drawing floor plans for commercial buildings such as schools, libraries and hospitals.
