Local golfers impress at junior tournament

Jacinta Pikunas of Boardman was the runner-upin the girls 15-18 division of the College Prep Series at Kent State, a 54-hole event as part of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour.

She finished with a score of +19 for the tournament.

Brian Terlesky of Boardman and Jared Wilson of Columbiana both finished in the top-15 of the boys 15-18 division. Terlesky was 5-over par on Monday to finish +20 for the tournament and tied for 13th. Wilson had an impressive round of 73 on Sunday and finished +21 in 15th place. Both players are eighth graders at their schools.

Cade Kreps came in eighth in the 11-14 division.

Duke wins second straight NCAA lax title

BALTIMORE

Duke won its second straight NCAA men’s lacrosse championship, holding off Notre Dame’s comeback with a goal by Kyle Keenan with 2:39 left to clinch an 11-9 victory Monday.

The top-seeded Blue Devils (17-3) limited the Irish to one goal over the first 35 minutes, built a six-goal lead in the third quarter and held on the capture their third national championship in the last five years.

It sure wasn’t easy. The sixth-seeded Irish (12-6) closed to 9-8 with 5 minutes left and had the ball with a chance to tie. But after Duke goalie Luke Aaron stopped a shot by Jim Marlatt, Keenan scored on the other end for a two-goal cushion.

Oregon St. top overall seed in road to Omaha

OMAHA, Neb.

Oregon State is the No. 1 national seed for the NCAA baseball tournament.

The Division I Baseball Committee on Monday made the Pac-12 champion Beavers (42-12) the top seed over SEC regular-season winner Florida (40-21). The other six national seeds, in order, are: Virginia, Indiana, Florida State, Louisiana-Lafayette, TCU and LSU.

The tournament opens Friday with 16 four-team, double-elimination regionals. Best-of-three super regionals will be held next week, with those winners moving to the College World Series in Omaha.

Indy 500 win nets Hunter-Reay $2.4M

INDIANAPOLIS

Ryan Hunter-Reay’s Indianapolis 500 win brought him a $2.49 million payday.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway announced the winnings Monday night. Hunter-Reay edged Helio Castroneves by 0.060 seconds Sunday in the second-closest margin of victory in the history of the race. He became the first American to win the Indy 500 since Sam Hornish Jr. in 2006.

Castoneves earned more than $785,000. Marco Andretti finished third, Carlos Munoz was fourth and Kurt Busch was sixth as Andretti Autosports captured four of the top six positions.

Caps hire MacLellan as GM, Trotz as coach

ARLINGTON, Va.

The Washington Capitals have promoted Brian MacLellan to general manager and hired former Nashville Predators coach Barry Trotz.

The team announced the moves Monday.

MacLellan, who also gets the title of senior vice president, replaces George McPhee, whose contract was not renewed after 17 seasons with the Capitals.

MacLellan has been with Washington for 13 seasons, seven as assistant GM. He played for five teams during a 10-year NHL playing career.

Trotz was the Predators’ coach for 15 seasons before being dropped from the job in April. In Washington, he takes over for Adam Oates, who was fired with a season left on his three-year deal.

This season, the Capitals missed the playoffs for the first time in seven years.
