YSU invites public to Selection Show viewing

AUSTINTOWN

The Youngstown State baseball team is inviting the public to watch the NCAA Baseball Tournament Selection Show with them today at noon at the Quaker Steak & Lube, 5800 Interstate Blvd., in Austintown. The Penguins will be making their second appearance in the NCAA Tournament after winning the Horizon League Tournament over the weekend. Their opponents in the NCAA Regionals, as well as the location, will be announced at noon on ESPNU.

Ursuline football camp scheduled in July

YOUNGSTOWN

The 2014 Ursuline football camp will be July 14-15 for students entering grades 2-9 in the fall. Registration forms for the camp may be obtained at the Hubbard Belleria or by e-mailing Larry Kempe at kempe4@aol.com. Cost is $60 for both days or $35 for one day.

Besides instruction by members of the school’s football staff, the list of guest college coaches includes YSU’s Eric Wolford, Toledo’s Tom Manning (OL), Fordham’s Tim Zetts (RB), YSU’s Rollen Smith (strength), Walsh’s Fred Thomas (DL) and Kyle McCarthy (Notre Dame), as well as past members of Ursuline’s 2010 state title team.

Warren youth golfer finishes just off pace

ORRVILLE

Donovan Ray of Warren finished with a 2-over-par 73, just one stroke behind the co-leaders in the boys 16-18 division of a Junior PGA qualifier at Riceland Golf Course on Saturday.

Isaac Davidson of East Liverpool finished a stroke behind Ray at 74, and Bruce Williams Wiggins of Columbiana shot an 81.

Mooney grad helps team win soccer title

Former Cardinal Mooney soccer player Ashley Cuba contributed an assist as the Washington Spirit Reserves defeated the Houston Aces, 2-0, on Sunday to win the U.S. Soccer Women’s National Amateur Championship. The Spirit Reserves play in the USL W-League. Cuba scored two goals in the Spirit’s regular season opener on May 17, a 4-1 victory over the Braddock Road Stars Elite. She holds University of Pittsburgh records for career goals scored and points scored.

Area drivers claim three wins at Sharon

HARTFORD

Travis Creech of Niles, Rex King Jr. of Bristolville and Shaun Hooks of New Castle, Pa., were among the winners on Saturday at Sharon Speedway. Creech won his third feature in four tries this season, taking the 12-lap non-stop Deforest Used Parts Mini Stock feature. King earned his second win of the year in the Hovis Auto & Truck Supply DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds. Hooks was victorious in the Gibson Insurance Agency Stock Cars.

Other winners were Will Thomas III in the Barris Supply RUSH Late Models, Joel Watson in the Summit Racing Equipment Modifieds and Derek Wagner in the TUSA Mod Lites.

Donovan sets MLS goal-scoring record

CARSON, Calif.

Landon Donovan broke the Major League Soccer goal record Sunday night, scoring his 135th and 136th regular-season goals in the Los Angeles Galaxy’s 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union. Playing for the first time since being cut from the U.S. World Cup team, Donovan broke a tie with Jeff Cunningham in the 49th minute with his first goal in four games this season, then added another in the 81st.

Federer, Williams sisters win at French

Roger Federer swept the last five games of the opening set, won 36 of 43 service points in the first two sets, and eliminated 87th-ranked Lukas Lacko of Slovakia 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the French Open on Sunday. Defending women’s champion Serena Williams beat 130th-ranked French wild-card entry Alize Lim 6-2, 6-1. Venus Williams defeated 17-year-old Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 6-4, 6-1.
