Officials are reminding thousands of Ohioans headed to cemeteries over Memorial Day weekend that there’s a protocol for raising upkeep concerns or other issues.

The weekend surrounding Monday’s holiday is the most popular of the year to visit cemeteries, as people pay respects at graves of loved ones and military veterans.

Commerce Director Andrew T. Porter says if an issue arises warranting a complaint, first contact the cemetery’s management. If the issue can’t be resolved there, a complaint may be filed with the Ohio Cemetery Dispute Resolution Commission. The commission works to help resolve disputes between concerned parties and cemeteries.

Common examples involve cemetery maintenance and management, or sales issues such as the purchase of interment rights, burial containers, markers or other items.
