Day set to thank donors at Habitat

STRUTHERS

On Thursday Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, 480 Youngstown-Poland Road, will have its sixth annual celebration to thank donors, volunteers, customers and the community with a tent sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Among items featured in this sale are furniture, building materials, lighting, appliances, home d cor, luggage, tile, and tools. Light refreshments will be served.

Habitat ReStore is a retail operation that sells new and used building materials and housewares. All items sold are donations and all proceeds help support the Habitat for Humanity of Mahoning County affiliate’s mission to build simple, decent and affordable housing. ReStore’s regular hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Summer hours, beginning the week of June 15, include Wednesday from 9 am to 4 p.m.

Ribbon-cutting

YOUNGSTOWN

A ribbon-cutting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday for the new Juliana Kurinka Children’s Play Area at Mill Creek Park’s James L. Wick Jr. Recreation Area. Funded in part by the Julianna Kurinka Trust, the playground consists of adventure, sand and tot play areas.

Free movies for A’s

During June, students from kindergarten through college can earn free movie or game rentals at area Family Video stores for each final “A” or equivalent mark they achieve on their report card in a core subject.

The company expects to give away more than 1 million free movie and game rentals next month. All Family Video affiliated Marco’s Pizza locations also will give away a small one-topping pizza. There is a limit of one pizza per student.

Preschool grant

YOUNGSTOWN

The D&E Counseling Center received an $11,000 grant from The James and Coralie Centofanti Charitable Foundation for its Preschool UPSTREAM Plus program.

The program is a home-based literacy and social skills program provided to Youngstown and Campbell City preschools. The goal of the program is to increase a parent’s or guardian’s ability to nurture their child’s social, emotional and literacy development to help them succeed in school.

Rabies clinic

VOLANT, PA.

A rabies clinic will be offered from 6 to 7:30 p.m. June 4 at the Plain Grove township building, 1029 Plain Grove Road.

For cats and dogs, the cost will be $8 per animal. Veterinarian Jeff McKissick will be present. Proceeds will benefit the March of Dimes. For information, call Deb Fuhr at 724-530-2143.

Hot Dog Day

NILES

The 2nd Annual Harry Stevens Hot Dog Day celebration will be noon to 8 p.m. June 29 in downtown Niles.

New to this year’s event is the hot dog-eating contest and Miss Niles/Little Miss Niles competitions, to be at the McKinley Presidential Memorial.

Stevens is credited with popularizing the hot dog, inventing the baseball scorecard and, by many accounts, the drinking straw.

Among the events are a 2 p.m. ceremony at Niles City Cemetery honoring Stevens.
