Civic Association will plan boat parade

LISBON

Guilford Lake Civic Association will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Guilford Lake Ruritan Hall, 33554 Ohio 172.

Speaker for the evening will be Adam Newbold, director of Advanced Training Group Worldwide, who will speak about concealed carry, situational awareness, personal defense and mindset.

Volunteers are needed to help with the 2014 Boat Parade and the public project of improving the playground at the Teegarden Pavilion.

Library sets fun activities for summer

Mad Science will be presented at 11 a.m. May 31 at St. Paul School, 925 E. State St.

The event is sponsored by the Salem Public Library for families with children under 12.

There also will be a photo contest of pets at the library, 821 E. State St., from June 2 to June 14. Entry forms and contest rules are available at library circulation desks and online at www.salem.lib.oh.us.

The contest is open to all ages, and photos will be exhibited from June 16 to June 28.

First- and second-place winners will be chosen by the voting public and will be announced July 2.

Benefit will help fight Ewing’s sarcoma

Signature Granite has donated a countertop granite kitchen for up to 40 square feet to benefit Justine Ula, who is battling Ewing’s sarcoma, cancer found in the bone or soft tissue, for the second time.

Tickets are $20 each, and the winner will be chosen May 31.

All proceeds will go to Ula.

Race car show will fund projects

CORTLAND

A Dirt Track Heroes High Octane Race Car Show to benefit the Jacob Lewis Memorial Fund Children’s Dream Racer Project will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. June 4 at the new Quaker Steak and Lube, 2191 Millennium Blvd.

Several local area dirt track race teams will have their race cars on display at the event. It includes an opportunity to meet local race car drivers and to win basket raffles and a 50-50 raffle.

Quaker Steak and Lube will donate 15 percent of all in-store food sales from 4 to 10 p.m. when customers show the event flier.

The Jacob Lewis Memorial Fund was established in 1995 after the death of a 6-year-old boy. It has donated thousands of dollars to assist families in need. The Dream Racer project is an effort to place a mobile IV therapy racer in every children’s hospital in the United States.

Library plans new activities

LEETONIA

Linda McElroy will present a workshop on genealogy from 6 to 7:30 p.m. June 9 at the Leetonia Community Public Library, 181 Walnut St.

Call the library at 330-427-6635 to sign up for the program. McElroy serves as president of the Columbiana County Archives and Research Center.

On June 10 the library summer reading program will begin for all ages to read, to participate in various events and programs and to earn points. Children will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesdays to make crafts. There will be a LEGO movie to attend for prizes each week, and teens and adults will earn a ticket for a prize drawing every time a library book is returned.

There also will be a re-purpose book craft program at 4 p.m. June 10.
