Canfield’s Mettille helps Mount win title

DELAWARE

Tyler Mettille from Canfield helped the Mount Union University men’s outdoor track and field team capture the NCAA Division III national championship Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Mettille, a junior, finished third in the 400 hurdles with a time of 51.03 and ran a leg on the fifth-place 4x100 relay team (41.26). He then teamed with Chase Swisher, Tyler Sparks and Chad Gentry to win the 4x400 relay in a school and stadium record 3:09.81, deciding the team title in the Purple Raiders’ favor. Mount Union finished with 47 points, five ahead of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Brad Smith football camp at Stambaugh

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown native Brad Smith’s True Foundation will hold its seventh annual football camp on June 21, 10 a.m-2 p.m., at Youngstown State University’s Stambaugh Stadium.

The free camp is open to students between ages 8-16. Campers will learn the fundamentals of the game and position-related skills. Those interested can find more information and register for the camp online at www.truefoundation16.org.

West Branch captures softball season finale

MINERVA

Senior Bailey McElwain hit two home runs and drove in five runs as the West Branch softball team defeated Minerva 11-4. West Branch’s Sarah Weber struck out four and walked none. The Warriors (18-7, 10-4 Northeastern Buckey) also had four hits from Jeni Stewart and three from Bailey Byers, including a homer.

Montgomerie leads Sr. PGA Championship

BENTON HARBOR, Mich.

Colin Montgomerie took the third-round lead in the Senior PGA Championship, making a winding, 30-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 3-under 68. Trying to win his first senior major after failing to capture one of golf’s four biggest events on the regular tours, the 51-year-old Scot took a 7-under 206 total into the final round at Harbor Shores.
