canfield Fire district chooses firm to design new station

CANFIELD
The Cardinal Joint Fire District this week settled on an architect to design a new fire station.
Fire Chief Don Hutchison said the new station will be in the northwest part of Canfield as the department has “slowly increased calls in that direction.” He added their longest response time is to calls in that section, and it is an 18-month process to erect a firehouse. It will be on Herbert Road, next to Canfield Township’s athletic fields.
The equipment levy, passed in 2006, will pay for the station, and it will not cost taxpayers any extra money. The cost of the project isn’t known yet as the architects have to draw up the plans first.
At this week’s city council meeting, Councilman John Morvay, also a member of the fire district’s board, said they picked BHSM Architects Inc., based in Youngstown. It was among three architecture firms interviewed by the board previously and currently is in contract negotiations.
The station will feature two bay doors, living quarters and training headquarters. Hutchison said BHSM will decide on the “pricing, size and everything else, so hopefully by the end of summer, we’ll have a drawing and how much it’s going to cost.”
