Troopers find pills, heroin

YOUNGSTOWN

Two men were arrested on drug charges after state troopers reported finding three bags of heroin and 11 pills during a traffic stop early Friday.

A trooper from the Ohio State Highway Patrol pulled over a car driven by 21-year-old Aaron Allen of Ottawa Avenue for having only one headlight after he spotted it while driving on a South Side street, reports said.

Reports said the trooper was able to pull the car over on Ravenwood Avenue, and the trooper saw a digital scale inside, which he was told was used to weigh food, reports said.

Reports said Allen was taken out of the car to be searched, and a sandwich bag with pills inside was found in one of Allen’s pockets. Allen then tried to run away and was tackled; an off-duty city police officer stopped and helped until other troopers arrived as backup, reports said.

Reports said Allen told the trooper he tried to run because of the pills. There were 10 pills in the bag, reports said, and a bag of suspected heroin also was found in Allen’s pockets, reports said.

A passenger, Maurice Holland, 18, of Rush Boulevard, was searched, and a bag of suspected heroin was found in his shoe. Another bag of heroin and another pill were found during a search of the car, reports said.

Both men were arraigned in municipal court Friday after they were taken to Mahoning County jail. Allen has a bond of $9,000 on charges of possession of heroin, possession of drugs and obstructing official business.

Holland faces a single count of possession of heroin. His bond is 10 percent of $5,000. They both have preliminary hearing dates Friday.
