Newcomers to meet

Newcomer’s of Mahoning Valley is having its monthly luncheon meeting on May 28 at Kensington Gold Club Restaurant. They will be installing the officers for next year and are looking forward to another year in supporting women and families that have had a change in their life. They have given others an opportunity for social events to meet and form friendships in the community for more than 25 years. The gathering starts at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at noon. Oh Wow! to close on Mondays

Starting on Memorial Day (May 26), OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology will be closed on Mondays. Summer hours remain in effect through Labor Day, (Sept. 1).

Riverfest 2014

Friends of the Mahoning River will be hosting Riverfest 2014 at the B&O Station in Youngstown June 7 from 12-4 p.m. Admission and parking are free.

There will be kayak and canoe rides provided by Trumbull Canoe Trails. Educational and historical activities and crafts for children will be available. Artists of the Rustbelt will be joining with Riverfest for the summer market from 1-7 p.m and June 8 from 12-5 p.m. For more information about the Riverfest, contact the Friends of the Mahoning River at mahoningriverfriends@gmail.com.

Fizz, Boom, Read!

Summer reading starts June 1 at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. There will be special presenters, authors, prizes and surprises for participants and a chance to meet an author. Go to libraryvisit.org/summerreading or visit a PLYMC library near you to register. Fizz, Boom, Read! is summer reading with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) theme. Children receive a coupon for a free ice cream cone from Dairy Queen and a Mahoning Valley Scrappers Game voucher just for signing up. For the first four hours read, children receive a paperback book while supplies last.

For the first eight hours read, children receive a beach ball (birth to age 8) or a light up yo-yo (ages 9-11). Children ages three and up will also get one free admission ticket to OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology. For the first 12 hours read, children earn a chance to win a $25 gift card to Toys‘R’Us (birth to age 8). Children ages 9-11 earn a chance to win an iPod shuffle. Children who read 30 hours will receive a special invitation to meet Jennifer Holm, author of “Babymouse” and “Squish,” when she visits in August.

Mill Creek MetroParks ribbon cutting

The public and media are invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony May 30 at 10 a.m. at the James L. Wick Jr. Recreation Area to celebrate the grand opening of Mill Creek MetroParks’ new Julianna Kurinka Children’s Play Area. MetroParks officials will present information about this project, recognize donors and be available for interviews and photographs. The project, a complete site redesign, consisted of numerous components, including demolition of existing infrastructure, adding and upgrading utilities, construction of new play areas, a perimeter concrete walk/curbing, and new sand volleyball courts, installation of new site lighting and furnishings and rehabilitation of the Thomas J. Bresko Pavilion. The new Children’s Play Area consists of an Adventure Play Area, Sand Play Area and Tot Play Area. The proposed wet playground area will be constructed when the fundraising goal is met. Light refreshments and tours of the new Adventure, Sand and Tot Play Areas will follow the ceremony. Donors/funders to the project include the Julianna Kurinka Trust, Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, J. Ford Crandall Memorial Foundation, Frank and Pearl Gelbman Foundation, Rotary Club of Youngstown, Thomases Family Endowment, and W. E. Bliss Foundation. Proceeds from the Fitness Together 5K, Mill Creek Maple Syrup sales, and MetroParks’ Green Cathedral Half Marathon/5K were designated to support this project as well.

Legacy Dog Rescue seeking donations

Legacy Dog Rescue and Friends of Fido are joining forces to help Sophie, a blind poodle mix picked up in Youngstown as a stray. With surgery she can regain her sight, but $4,000 must be raised for the procedure. On June 14 from 12-5 p.m., there will be a Chinese auction at Davidson’s Restaurant and Tavern, located at 3636 Canfield Road. There will be numerous baskets and prizes to win, including a $100 bill in the auction, a keurig coffee maker, statuary and more. There will also be a $100 lottery tree raffle. All donations are tax deductible and can be sent to Legacy Dog Rescue, PO Box 3643, Youngstown, Ohio 44513.

Garden adventure

Enjoy a day of family fun adventuring throughout Fellows Riverside Gardens June 7 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Meet the Queen of Hearts, drink tea like the Mad Hatter, join in making music and a variety of hands-on activities with organizations including Youngstown State University, the Green Team, the Audubon Society and more. Blues, Brews and BBQ

Trolley tours

Peregrine falcons, a threatened species, have been nesting in downtown Youngstown for a decade. Zumba at the Morley

Family garden Fridays

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens each Friday starting May 9 until Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. to take part in activities in the family garden. Watch as the garden grows with characters from Alice in Wonderland and Wonderland-like plants. Learn about garden creatures, tools and how to care for a garden. Take part in making garden treats, listening to stories, children’s yoga and adventuring with Alice and her friends. This event is free to all.

Family tour day

Summer story time

Come to MetroParks Farm June 30 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. for a story about tractors and then use a toy tractor to make a unique painted picture. Washable paint will be used, so dress appropriately. Explore wildlife

Children ages 5-6 who are accompanied by an adult are invited to Ford Nature Center June 24 or 26 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to discover the wildlife of Mill Creek MetroParks. Exploration will include hiking, nature games, crafts, stream-stomping, bug-catching, scavenger hunts, meeting live animals and a ride on the Lake Glacier Passenger Boat. Explore heritage and history

Children ages 8 and up are invited to Lanterman’s Mill, the Old Log Cabin and Pioneer Pavilion June 24 and 26 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. to meet at a different historic Mill Creek MetroPark site and enjoy summer activities and explore the heritage and history of the Mahoning Valley. True beauty

Girls ages 10-14 are invited to Ford Nature Center and Fellows Riverside Gardens June 30 and July 2 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. to learn about true beauty. This empowering summer camp uses journaling and inspirational women to lead girls in discovering their own inner beauty. Girls will have the chance to learn, create and grow though zumba, gardening, self-defense, yoga, meditation, making lip balm, facial scrubs and friendship bracelets. Call 330-740-7107 to register. Loose knit group

Enjoy the view from the Antonucci library at Fellows Riverside Gardens June 6 and 20 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. as you help to create blankets for organizations that give to those in need. All helping hands are welcome, both experienced and anyone wanting to learn to knit or crochet. Donations of yarn and needles are appreciated at any time. Registration is not necessary.

Introduction to floral drawing

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens June 10 and 17 from 6:30-9 p.m. to learn the basics of drawing flowers and leaves with artist Marianne Hilke during this five hour course. Papers, pencils, lighting, texture and composition will be the focus in this workshop. There will be mini projects with problem solving to help make you understand how to construct a good finished drawing. Supplies are included in the course fee. Stoneware wine chiller

Summer gardens in Ohio

Join Fellows Riverside Gardens June 11 from 7:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. for a tour at the local Draime Estate Gardens in Warren. Then travel to the Western Reserve Conservancy over in Moreland Hills and have lunch. Spend an afternoon at Druckenbrod Daylily Farm, take a visit to the Kent Bog State Nature Preserve and finally have dinner. Deadline to register is June 13. Lily Pond hike

Wild with Style art show

Plant spirals exhibit

Come to Fellow Riverside Gardens in the Weller Gallery through June 8 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. for the plant spirals exhibit. This exhibit takes an up-close look at the world of fibonacci numbers and their relationship to the world.

Chasing the Light exhibit

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens in the Weller Gallery June 13 through Aug. 10 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. to see Christopher Leeper, a realist painter and local artist who works in various mediums.

Through the Lens

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens in the Melnick Museuem through December 2014 for the Through the Lens exhibit. This exhibit displays a rare collection of glass negatives and acetate film negatives produced by two local photographers which chronicle scenes of Mill Creek Park from 1907-1926. Several portrait negatives of the period will also be on display.

Class of 1984 reunion

Baby Bargain Boutique set for June 7

Boardman Park will be having its annual Baby Bargain Boutique on June 7 at the Masters Pavilion from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Admission is free with a non-perishable food item donation for Second Harvest Food Bank. The Baby Bargain Boutique allows families to purchase good usable baby, children and maternity clothing, toys, books furniture and much more for children under the age of eight. For those who have items to sell, reservations for table rentals start May 7 for Boardman residents and May 8 for non-residents. Boardman Park to offer Adventure Camp

Register online for Boardman Park Adventure Camp at www.boardmanparkcamp.com. You will create your own account where you sign up for your preferred weeks and track your payments. Discounts will be given for early bird enrollment if paid by June 6. Boardman resident and multi-sibling family discounts will be offered when application is completed. The camp will take place June 16 through August 15. Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for children who have completed kindergarten and up to 12 years old. Arrangements can be made if you need to bring campers early or pick them up later. In addition to experiencing the outdoors, the children will benefit from arts and crafts, team building, creative arts, science and sports. The goal of the camp is to offer young minds the opportunity to explore their imagination, discover physical fitness, expand their knowledge of sports and develop a growing sense of adventure through diverse activities. Memorial Mile run to be May 26

The 24th annual Memorial Mile running road race will take place on May 26 at 9:35 a.m. in Boardman. Some of the best runners in the area will compete for gift certificates and awards in 14 age groups. Runners ages 11 and under are free with pre-registration by May 19. The entry fee is $8 in advance for all others and $10 day of race for everyone. The race starts at Routes 224 and 7. Day of race registration and packets can be picked up at Walgreens at Route 224 and Route 7. The event is sponsored by Walgreens, Quaker Steak and Lube in Boardman, the DeBartolo Corporation, Armstrong, Novak and Davis Insurance and other local businesses. Fish dinner Fridays

American Legion Post 737, located at 16465 Milton Ave. in Lake Milton, will serve all-you-can-eat fried fish with french fries or macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, rolls and beverage on Fridays from 3-7 p.m. Chicken or shrimp is also available. Spring for Life fundraiser

Poland High School summer concert band

The instrumental music department at Poland Seminary High School is organizing the first annual Poland summer concert band to perform this summer at the Celebrate Poland festival. All residents of Poland are welcome to participate, as well as any PSHS alumni living out of town. The band will be conducted by former PSHS band director, Albert Colella, assisted by current PSHS band director Nicholas Olesko. The music will be sent out one month in advance. Optional rehearsals will take place June 18 from 6-7:30 p.m. and June 25 from 6-7:30 p.m. at McKinley Elementary. Mandatory rehearsal will take place June 27 from 4-6 p.m. at McKinley Elementary. The performance will be June 27 at 8 p.m. at the Poland Village Gazebo. Proper flag disposal

During the month of May, Shepherd of the Valley is taking in tired, torn and faded American flags that need to be retired. Most flags are not retired and burned with the ceremony they deserve. Some are burned in a barrel; some in a pile on the ground; others are cremated at a funeral home. Shepherd of the Valley wants to change this. Flags can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Spring Spectacular Sale and Bazaar

Bonding with babies and books

Caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months are invited to the Poland library Wednesdays in May at 10 a.m. for 20 minutes of language enrichment, including rhymes, songs and stories followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Trim a tree for May

Children of all ages are invited to decorate an ornament for the all-seasons tree at the Poland library during the month of May.

The Ursuline Center announces 2014 guided labyrinth walks

The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, will begin its 2014 guided labyrinth walk season April 27 (weather permitting) with a short presentation on the Spirituality of Labyrinths at 2 p.m. in the center and a guided walk immediately following. This year the center is offering a series of themed walks. On April 27 at 2 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Rebirth,” on May 13 at 6:30 p.m. the walk will be “On the Path to Healing,” on June 19 at 6:30 p.m. the walk will be “On the Path to Emancipation: Freedom of Mind, Body and Spirit” in correlation with the Juneteenth holiday, on July 15 at 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Growing,” on Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Accepting,” on Sept. 16, 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Peace” and on Oct. 12 at 2 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Awareness” (presentation on Spirituality of Labyrinths in the center).

All people of faith are invited to attend, whether they are new to or experienced with walking a labyrinth. Walking the labyrinth usually takes about 20 minutes. People wishing to experience the Labyrinth but unable to make one of the guided walks can come anytime at their own convenience. There are printed guides that give suggestions for following the path provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk. People can use the labyrinth in any way they need. The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. Gamblers Anonymous to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Cornersburg. Banding the baby falcons

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife hopes to have newly hatched peregrine falcons to band and the public is invited to watch. If you would like to attend this special activity, which will take place downtown on a week day, Ford Nature Center will keep a contact list. As soon as ODNR-DOW gives the details, you will be contacted with the date and time.

Several portrait negatives of the period also on display.

Wild With Style Art Show seeking entries

Amateur artists of all ages may submit artwork for display. Entries will be accepted at Ford Nature Center starting May 24 until June 1. Nicotine Anonymous to meet on Wednesdays

Nicotine Anonymous is a fellowship of individuals from every walk of life who meets every Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Wickliffe Presbyterian Church, located at 45 Idlewood Road in Austintown, to solve their common problem - an addiction to nicotine. The group is based on the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and the only requirement to join is a desire to stop using nicotine. Cardinal 5K Donut Run

The Canfield Athletic Booster Club will be hosting the Cardinal 5K Donut Run May 26 at 11 a.m., with registration at 10 a.m., at Cardinal Stadium. All proceeds go to the athletic programs of the Canfield Cardinals. Runners will receive a Cardinal dry-fit t-shirt. The fee is $25. Make checks payable to Canfield Athletic Booster Club and send them to the Canfield High School athletic office, located at 100 Cardinal Drive. There will also be a Munchkin Run; those ten years of age and under are free. You may register as a team or an individual. Runners participate at their own risk.

Marge Hartman’s Paws Town at Boardman Park

Boardman Twp. Park and Marge Hartman’s Paws Town, a volunteer -non-profit organization, have partnered to create Boardman’s first dog park. Thanks to a large gift from the Marge Hartman Foundation, and the fund raising efforts of Paws Town, INC. organization, the Marge Hartman’s Paws Town Dog Park is open and accepting membership applications. Memberships will be good for one year from April 1 until March 31, 2015. Membership fees will not be prorated. Memberships for Boardman residents will be $40 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Non-Boardman resident fee will be $65 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Membership packets may be picked up at the Boardman Park Office, in the outdoor literature boxes at the Dog Park, or online at boardmanpark.com. Beginning April 1, everyone using Paws Town Dog Park must have a membership in order to ensure that all dogs are healthy and vaccinated. New members will be given a code to enter the dog park and they will also be issued a badge to wear.

Fibonacci numbers exhibit

Come to the Weller Gallery through June 8 to view the fibonacci numbers exhibit which takes an up-close look at the world of fibonacci numbers and their relationship to the world.

Through the Lens

Short term host family opportunities available through 4-H

Mahoning, Columbiana, Portage, and Trumbull County families will have the opportunity to welcome a young person from Japan into their home for one month this year, as part of an international exchange program being offered by the County OSU Extension, 4-H. Statewide, host families are needed for 100 Japanese youngsters (aged 12-18) and their adult chaperones, who will visit Ohio from July 23 through Aug. 18.

Host families provide the exchangees with room and board and a chance to experience daily life in America. Families are urged not to alter their daily routines or lifestyles during their visitor’s stay. Exchangees provide their own spending money, and the sponsoring organization furnishes comprehensive medical insurance.

All types of families are welcome to apply to become hosts, including urban, rural, single-parent, childless, and non-4-H families. The only requirements are that for the Japanese month-long exchange, hosts must have a family member of the same gender and approximate age of the exchangee, three meals a day, and a separate bed for the visitor.
