Boardman track team improves record


The Boardman boys track team improved its Federal League record to 5-1 and its overall record to 6-1 with an 81-56 victory over the Perry Panthers.

The Spartans initially scored in the 4x800 meter relay with the team of freshmen Chris Butler, Jack Swavel, Matt Maroni and senior Kevin McNally. In the 110-meter hurdles, senior Jeff Bean placed first in 15.6 seconds. In the 100-meter dash, senior Brian Bodrick was first at 11.4 seconds and classmate Ivan Adu-Poku was second at 11.8.

The 4x200 meter relay team of Bodrick, senior Turel Thompson, freshman Sheldon Broyles and sophomore Brendon Lucas placed first at 1:33.7. In the 1600-meter run, senior Mark Hadley was first in a time of 4:16. The 4x100 meter relay team freshmen Caden Kasler, Jose Rosado, Jeff Kollar and Pierre Grizzard finished first in a time of 49.9 seconds. In the 400-meter run, Lucas finished first in a time of 51.8 and senior Alan Burns was second at 52.3 seconds. In the next event, the 300-meter hurdles, sophomore Nick Cessna was first in 45.5 seconds and sophomore Namontey Law was second at 45.8. In the 800-meter run, Hadley placed first with a time of 1:58.

“We had a lot of our younger guys step up and get into the scoring column tonight,” explained Phillips, “Sheldon Broyles, Namontey Law and Pierre Grizzard all had a nice night and their futures are very bright.”

In the 200-meter dash Broyles was first in 23.71 seconds, Lucas second at 23.73 and Adu-Poku third at 23.9. The next event was the 3200-meter run where junior Nick Long placed third at 10:28. In the field events, senior Mike Sferra was third in the discus with a throw of 127 feet 6 inches. Thompson won the long jump with a leap of 20 feet 3 inches and sophomore Ayo Ojewale in third at 17 feet 5.5 inches. Bean took first in the high jump at 6 feet and Law was third at 5 feet 6 inches. Senior Steve Brown was second in the pole vault and junior Andrew Cessna was third.

Next up for the Spartans is the highly competitive Euclid Relays, where some of the best athletes in Ohio will compete. The final home meet will be against Mooney and Ursuline.
