Newcomers to meet

Newcomer’s of Mahoning Valley is having its monthly luncheon meeting on May 28 at Kensington Gold Club Restaurant. They will be installing the officers for next year and are looking forward to another year in supporting women and families that have had a change in their life. They have given others an opportunity for social events to meet and form friendships in the community for more than 25 years. The gathering starts at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at noon. Jazz concert at BHS

The Boardman High School Spring Jazz Concert will take place on May 30 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School Cafeteria. This culmination of another extraordinary year for the jazz program at Boardman will feature the BHS Jazz Ensembles 1, 2 and 3 all under the direction of Thomas M. Ruggieri. The talents of the outgoing seniors will be highlighted. Admission at the door is $3 for adults and $2 for students. Senior citizens are admitted free of charge. Pizza, popcorn, soft drinks and bottled water will be sold. Patrons are asked to enter through the gymnasium entrance at the north side of the building because there is a dance recital in the BPAC that night. The BHS Summer Jazz Ensemble is also slated to perform at the St. Charles Festival on June 20, at Columbiana’s Firestone Park on July 7 and at a WaterFire event in Sharon, Pa. in August.

Disotell gets J.D.

Mike Disotell, a graduate of Boardman High School, received his Juris Doctor on May 9 from The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law. Disotell graduated near the top of his class and was awarded the Public Service Fellow distinction. Before law school, Disotell graduated Magna Cum Laude from Westminster College, majoring in English. After taking the Ohio bar exam in July, Disotell will begin his career at the international law firm Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP. Disotell is the son of Darlene and Bill Disotell.

Stadium Drive students raise money for children’s hospital

Throughout the month of April, students in first and second grade at Stadium Drive Elementary School chose to again participate in the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Math-A-Thon for the 22nd year in a row. This event raises money for the family and patients at St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Students are given a packet of math problems and ask for donations as they complete the assignments. The Math-A-Thon is an optional program students have taken part in at Stadium Drive since 1992. This year the students raised $1,656, and throughout the past 22 years they have raised a combined $22,805.61.

Oh Wow! to close on Mondays

Starting on Memorial Day (May 26), OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology will be closed on Mondays. Summer hours remain in effect through Labor Day, (Sept. 1).

Riverfest 2014

Friends of the Mahoning River will be hosting Riverfest 2014 at the B&O Station in Youngstown June 7 from 12-4 p.m. Admission and parking are free. There will be kayak and canoe rides provided by Trumbull Canoe Trails. Educational and historical activities and crafts for children will be available. Fizz, Boom, Read!

Summer reading starts June 1 at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. There will be special presenters, authors, prizes and surprises for participants and a chance to meet an author. Go to libraryvisit.org/summerreading or visit a PLYMC library near you to register. Fizz, Boom, Read! is summer reading with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) theme. Children receive a coupon for a free ice cream cone from Dairy Queen and a Mahoning Valley Scrappers Game voucher just for signing up. For the first four hours read, children receive a paperback book while supplies last.

For the first eight hours read, children receive a beach ball (birth to age 8) or a light up yo-yo (ages 9-11). Children ages three and up will also get one free admission ticket to OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology. For the first 12 hours read, children earn a chance to win a $25 gift card to Toys‘R’Us (birth to age 8). Children ages 9-11 earn a chance to win an iPod shuffle. Children who read 30 hours will receive a special invitation to meet Jennifer Holm, author of “Babymouse” and “Squish,” when she visits in August.

Mill Creek MetroParks to celebrate ribbon cutting

The public and media are invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony May 30 at 10 a.m. at the James L. Wick Jr. Recreation Area to celebrate the grand opening of Mill Creek MetroParks’ new Julianna Kurinka Children’s Play Area. MetroParks officials will present information about this project, recognize donors and be available for interviews and photographs. The project, a complete site redesign, consisted of numerous components, including demolition of existing infrastructure, adding and upgrading utilities, construction of new play areas, a perimeter concrete walk/curbing, and new sand volleyball courts, installation of new site lighting and furnishings and rehabilitation of the Thomas J. Bresko Pavilion. The new Children’s Play Area consists of an Adventure Play Area, Sand Play Area and Tot Play Area. The proposed wet playground area will be constructed when the fundraising goal is met. Light refreshments and tours of the new Adventure, Sand and Tot Play Areas will follow the ceremony. Donors/funders to the project include the Julianna Kurinka Trust, Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, J. Ford Crandall Memorial Foundation, Frank and Pearl Gelbman Foundation, Rotary Club of Youngstown, Thomases Family Endowment, and W. E. Bliss Foundation. Proceeds from the Fitness Together 5K, Mill Creek Maple Syrup sales, and MetroParks’ Green Cathedral Half Marathon/5K were designated to support this project as well.

Legacy Dog Rescue seeking donations

Legacy Dog Rescue and Friends of Fido are joining forces to help Sophie, a blind poodle mix picked up in Youngstown as a stray. With surgery she can regain her sight, but $4,000 must be raised for the procedure. On June 14 from 12-5 p.m., there will be a Chinese auction at Davidson’s Restaurant and Tavern, located at 3636 Canfield Road. There will be numerous baskets and prizes to win, including a $100 bill in the auction, a keurig coffee maker, statuary and more. There will also be a $100 lottery tree raffle. All donations are tax deductible and can be sent to Legacy Dog Rescue, PO Box 3643, Youngstown, Ohio 44513.

Garden adventure

Enjoy a day of family fun adventuring throughout Fellows Riverside Gardens June 7 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Meet the Queen of Hearts, drink tea like the Mad Hatter, join in making music and a variety of hands-on activities with organizations including Youngstown State University, the Green Team, the Audubon Society and more. Trolley tours

Volunteer-led recreational hikes are generally faster paced and focus on exercising in the outdoors.

Falcon watch

Peregrine falcons, a threatened species, have been nesting in downtown Youngstown for a decade. Family garden Fridays

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens each Friday starting May 9 until Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. to take part in activities in the family garden. Watch as the garden grows with characters from Alice in Wonderland and Wonderland-like plants. Learn about garden creatures, tools and how to care for a garden. Take part in making garden treats, listening to stories, children’s yoga and adventuring with Alice and her friends. This event is free to all.

Family tour day

Come to MetroParks Farm June 12 and 26 at 10 a.m. to take a guided tractor wagon ride and tour the barns to learn about the animals and play in the farm playroom. Call 330-533-7572 to register. Space on the wagon is limited. Pack a snack or lunch and stay around after the tour.

Scavenger hunt

Summer story time

Come to MetroParks Farm June 30 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. for a story about tractors and then use a toy tractor to make a unique painted picture. Washable paint will be used, so dress appropriately. Explore wildlife

Children ages 5-6 who are accompanied by an adult are invited to Ford Nature Center June 24 or 26 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to discover the wildlife of Mill Creek MetroParks. Exploration will include hiking, nature games, crafts, stream-stomping, bug-catching, scavenger hunts, meeting live animals and a ride on the Lake Glacier Passenger Boat. Explore heritage and history

Children ages 8 and up are invited to Lanterman’s Mill, the Old Log Cabin and Pioneer Pavilion June 24 and 26 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. to meet at a different historic Mill Creek MetroPark site and enjoy summer activities and explore the heritage and history of the Mahoning Valley. True beauty

Girls ages 10-14 are invited to Ford Nature Center and Fellows Riverside Gardens June 30 and July 2 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. to learn about true beauty. This empowering summer camp uses journaling and inspirational women to lead girls in discovering their own inner beauty. Loose knit group

Enjoy the view from the Antonucci library at Fellows Riverside Gardens June 6 and 20 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. as you help to create blankets for organizations that give to those in need. All helping hands are welcome, both experienced and anyone wanting to learn to knit or crochet. Donations of yarn and needles are appreciated at any time. Registration is not necessary.

Introduction to floral drawing

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens June 10 and 17 from 6:30-9 p.m. to learn the basics of drawing flowers and leaves with artist Marianne Hilke during this five hour course. Papers, pencils, lighting, texture and composition will be the focus in this workshop. There will be mini projects with problem solving to help make you understand how to construct a good finished drawing. Supplies are included in the course fee. Stoneware wine chiller

Summer gardens in Ohio

Join Fellows Riverside Gardens June 11 from 7:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. for a tour at the local Draime Estate Gardens in Warren. Then travel to the Western Reserve Conservancy over in Moreland Hills and have lunch. Spend an afternoon at Druckenbrod Daylily Farm, take a visit to the Kent Bog State Nature Preserve and finally have dinner. Deadline to register is June 13. Lily Pond hike

Botanical delights

Come to Fellows Riverside Gardens June 14 from 2-4 p.m. to explore the differences between the tropical, fruity hibiscus (H. sabdariffa) and the other native, marsh-loving mallow (H. moscheutos) in habit, medicinal properties and more. Wild with Style art show

Baby Bargain Boutique set for June 7

Boardman Park will be having its annual Baby Bargain Boutique on June 7 at the Masters Pavilion from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Admission is free with a non-perishable food item donation for Second Harvest Food Bank. The Baby Bargain Boutique allows families to purchase good usable baby, children and maternity clothing, toys, books furniture and much more for children under the age of eight. For those who have items to sell, reservations for table rentals start May 7 for Boardman residents and May 8 for non-residents. Table reservations can only be made at the park office from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Indoor and outdoor spots are available. The price for Boardman residents is $20 for inside and $15 for outside. Boardman Park to offer Adventure Camp

Register online for Boardman Park Adventure Camp at www.boardmanparkcamp.com. You will create your own account where you sign up for your preferred weeks and track your payments. Discounts will be given for early bird enrollment if paid by June 6. Boardman resident and multi-sibling family discounts will be offered when application is completed. The camp will take place June 16 through August 15. Camp hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for children who have completed kindergarten and up to 12 years old. Memorial Mile run to be May 26

The 24th annual Memorial Mile running road race will take place on May 26 at 9:35 a.m. in Boardman. Some of the best runners in the area will compete for gift certificates and awards in 14 age groups. Runners ages 11 and under are free with pre-registration by May 19. The entry fee is $8 in advance for all others and $10 day of race for everyone. The race starts at Routes 224 and 7. Day of race registration and packets can be picked up at Walgreens at Route 224 and Route 7. HHMP to present car show

The HMHP Foundation is partnering with Sweeney Chevrolet, Buick, GMC to present the second annual Fuel the Fight: Drive Out Prostate Cancer mega car show and family event from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. on June 1. Middle schools to present spring concert

The Boardman Middle Schools will present a fifth-, sixth- and seventh-grade band spring concert May 28 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman High School Performing Arts Center. This concert will feature the bands from both Center and Glenwood Middle Schools. The fifth-grade band portion will include a performance of “Hang on Sloopy,” the state of Ohio’s official rock song. The sixth-grade band portion will include “Limbo Rock” as performed by Chubby Checker and arrangements of “Let It Go” from Disney’s “Frozen” and “Cups” as recorded by Anna Kendrick. The concert will close with the combined seventh-grade band performance of “Sounds of Sousa,” including “The Stars and Stripes Forever” as arranged by James Ployhar. Proper flag disposal

During the month of May, Shepherd of the Valley is taking in tired, torn and faded American flags that need to be retired.

Most flags are not retired and burned with the ceremony they deserve. Some are burned in a barrel; some in a pile on the ground; others are cremated at a funeral home. Shepherd of the Valley wants to change this.

Flags can be dropped off at any Shepherd of the Valley community between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily. Drop-off hours for the corporate offices are 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. Flags will be delivered to a local veteran’s group for proper disposal.

The Ursuline Center announces 2014 guided labyrinth walks

The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, will begin its 2014 guided labyrinth walk season April 27 (weather permitting) with a short presentation on the Spirituality of Labyrinths at 2 p.m. in the center and a guided walk immediately following. This year the center is offering a series of themed walks. On April 27 at 2 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Rebirth,” on May 13 at 6:30 p.m. the walk will be “On the Path to Healing,” on June 19 at 6:30 p.m. the walk will be “On the Path to Emancipation: Freedom of Mind, Body and Spirit” in correlation with the Juneteenth holiday, on July 15 at 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Growing,” on Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Accepting,” on Sept. 16, 6:30 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Peace” and on Oct. 12 at 2 p.m., the walk will be “On the Path to Awareness” (presentation on Spirituality of Labyrinths in the center).

All people of faith are invited to attend, whether they are new to or experienced with walking a labyrinth. Walking the labyrinth usually takes about 20 minutes. People wishing to experience the Labyrinth but unable to make one of the guided walks can come anytime at their own convenience. There are printed guides that give suggestions for following the path provided at the Labyrinth’s entrance, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk. People can use the labyrinth in any way they need. The Ursuline Center Labyrinth is a ministry of the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown and open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. Gamblers Anonymous to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. Nicotine Anonymous to meet on Wednesdays

Nicotine Anonymous is a fellowship of individuals from every walk of life who meets every Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Wickliffe Presbyterian Church, located at 45 Idlewood Road in Austintown, to solve their common problem - an addiction to nicotine. The group is based on the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous and the only requirement to join is a desire to stop using nicotine. Cardinal 5K Donut Run

The Canfield Athletic Booster Club will be hosting the Cardinal 5K Donut Run May 26 at 11 a.m., with registration at 10 a.m., at Cardinal Stadium. All proceeds go to the athletic programs of the Canfield Cardinals. Runners will receive a Cardinal dry-fit t-shirt. The fee is $25. Marge Hartman’s Paws Town at Boardman Park

Boardman Twp. Park and Marge Hartman’s Paws Town, a volunteer -non-profit organization, have partnered to create Boardman’s first dog park. Thanks to a large gift from the Marge Hartman Foundation, and the fund raising efforts of Paws Town, INC. organization, the Marge Hartman’s Paws Town Dog Park is open and accepting membership applications. Memberships will be good for one year from April 1 until March 31, 2015. Membership fees will not be prorated. Memberships for Boardman residents will be $40 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Non-Boardman resident fee will be $65 for one dog and $10 for each additional dog. Membership packets may be picked up at the Boardman Park Office, in the outdoor literature boxes at the Dog Park, or online at boardmanpark.com. Beginning April 1, everyone using Paws Town Dog Park must have a membership in order to ensure that all dogs are healthy and vaccinated. New members will be given a code to enter the dog park and they will also be issued a badge to wear.

Lanterman’s Mill hours

Lanterman’s Mill will be having limited hours beginning April 5 on Saturdays and Sundays only from 12-4 p.m. with full hours beginning May 1. Full hours will be Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and closed on Mondays.

St. Charles School registration

Registration for children entering St. Charles for the 2014-2015 school year is taking place now. The following materials are needed to complete registration: copy of birth certificate, copy of baptismal certificate (if Catholic) and immunization records. Effective Fall 2011, Ohio law now requires that every kindergarten or first-grade student entering school must have two varicella/chicken pox as well as the other required immunizations by day 14 of school or they cannot attend until up-to-date. Grades 4-6 students need only one varicella. Grade 7 students need Tdap or Td booster. A Social Security number and $25 non-refundable registration fee is also required. Checks can be made payable to Lumen Christi Catholic Schools. Proof of child custody (if applicable), and a copy of the child’s last report card from previous school must be provided for grades 1-8 only. The registration application takes about 10-15 minutes to fill out with basic information, including work addresses and phone numbers.

Boardman Local Schools announce 2014/2015 kindergarten registration

The Boardman Local School District is now offering kindergarten registration for the 2014-2015 school year. Any parent who is a Boardman resident interested in signing their child up for kindergarten may visit the elementary school they wish their child to attend to pick up registration forms. Requirements for registration are: the child must be five years of age on or before Aug. 1, the registration form must be completed, the original birth certificate must be supplied, proof of residency in at least two forms (tax statement, utility bill, purchase/rental agreement) as well as a residency affidavit, custody papers if applicable and payment of $25 to partially cover supply costs furnished by the school. Short term host family opportunities available through 4-H

Mahoning, Columbiana, Portage, and Trumbull County families will have the opportunity to welcome a young person from Japan into their home for one month this year, as part of an international exchange program being offered by the County OSU Extension, 4-H. Statewide, host families are needed for 100 Japanese youngsters (aged 12-18) and their adult chaperones, who will visit Ohio from July 23 through Aug. 18.

Host families provide the exchangees with room and board and a chance to experience daily life in America. Families are urged not to alter their daily routines or lifestyles during their visitor’s stay. Exchangees provide their own spending money, and the sponsoring organization furnishes comprehensive medical insurance. All types of families are welcome to apply to become hosts, including urban, rural, single-parent, childless, and non-4-H families. The only requirements are that for the Japanese month-long exchange, hosts must have a family member of the same gender and approximate age of the exchangee, three meals a day, and a separate bed for the visitor.
