Boardman boys track team improve record

The Boardman boys track team improved its 2014 record to 3-1 in the Federal League and 4-1 overall with an 83-54 victory over the North Canton Hoover Vikings.

The Spartans opened the meet with a victory in the 4x800 meter relay with the team of junior Nick Long, senior Justin Maroni, sophomore Adam Deeley and senior Alan Burns with a time of 8:45. In the 110-meter hurdles senior Jeff Bean placed first at 15.3 seconds. Senior Ivan Adu-Poku placed first in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.6 seconds. Boardman won the 4x200 meter relay with the team of freshman Sheldon Broyles, sophomore Brendan Lucas, senior Turel Thompson and senior Brian Bodrick in a time of 1:35.8. In the 1600-meter run, Maroni placed first at 4:55 and freshman Nathaniel Ams was third at 4:56. The 4x100 meter relay team of Adu-Poku, sophomore AJ Pantaleo, Thompson and Bodrick took first in a time of 46 seconds.

“We wanted to open up the meet with a commanding lead so we could rest some guys in later events,” explained Spartan Head Coach John Phillips, “Credit our sprinters and distance runners for being ready to roll.”

Lucas won the 400 in a time of 52.7. In the 300 hurdles, Pantaleo took second at 45.7 seconds with sophomore Nick Cessna third at 45.9. In the 800-meter run Burns was second at 2:08. Bodrick took first in the 200-meter dash in 23.1 seconds with Lucas in third at 23.7.

The next event was the 3200-meter run, which was won by senior Mark Hadley in a time of 9:31 with Long in second at 10:50.

In the field events, freshman George Wallace was second in the shot put with a throw of 41 feet 1/2 inch and senior Sean Lonardo was third at 40 feet 6 inches. Lonardo placed first in the discus with a throw of 116 feet and 2 inches with freshman Steve Taylor in third at 113 feet 2 inches.

In the long jump, Thompson was first at 19 feet 6 inches with sophomore Ayo Ojewale in third at 18 feet 6 inches. In the high jump Bean took first with a leap of 6 feet. The pole vault saw senior Steve Brown in first at 11 feet 6 inches.
