Boardman boys track team defeats Uniontown

The Boardman Boys track team improved its Federal League record to 4-1 and overall record to 5-1 with a 93-44 victory over the Uniontown Lake Blue Streaks.

The Spartans began the meet by sweeping the 110-meter hurdles. Senior Jeff Bean took first at 16.01 seconds, sophomore AJ Pantaleo was second at 17.38 and sophomore Nick Cessna was third at 17.83. In the 100-meter dash, senior Ivan Adu-Poku was second at 11.94 seconds and freshman Sheldon Broyles was third at 11.98. The 4x200 meter relay team of Broyles, sophomore Brendan Lucas, senior Turel Thompson and senior Brian Bodrick took first at 1:35. In the 1600-meter run, senior Mark Hadley took first with a time of 4:24. The Spartans won the 4x100 meter relay with the team of Adu-Poku, Pantaleo, Thompson and Bodrick in a time of 45.09 seconds. Lucas placed first in the 400-meter run with a time of 53.7 seconds.

In the 300 hurdles, the Spartans swept all spots again with Bean in first at 43.66, Cessna in second at 46.06 and sophomore Namontey Law in third at 46.68. The 200-meter dash was won by Bodrick at 24.23 seconds.

The next event was the 3200-meter run, which saw senior Alan Burns take first at 9:41 and senior Justin Maroni second at 10:15. The Spartans capped the meet by winning the 4x400 with the team of Pantaleo, sophomore Mike Vidman, sophomore Ayo Ojewale and sophomore Tyler Kellam in a time of 3:45.

“This week is always taxing on our kids,” explained Spartan head coach John Phillips. “Having two meets in three days is very tough, but we were able to use most guys in just two events and still put up some very impressive numbers.”

In the field events, Thompson took first in the long jump at 19 feet 6 inches with Pantaleo in third at 17 feet 1 1/2 inches and, in the high jump, Bean was first at 5 feet 10 inches.

In the discus, the Spartans swept the event with senior Mike Sferra in first with a throw of 125 feet 1 inch, senior Sean Lonardo in second at 123 feet 7 inches and freshman George Wallace in third at 121 feet 1 inch. Lonardo took second in the shot put at 40 feet 1/2 inch and Wallace took third at 39 feet 11 1/2 inches.

In the pole vault, senior Steve Brown took first at 12 feet 6 inches and junior Dan Liptak was third with a vault of 9 feet.
