Austintown Intermediate School celebrated the students’ First In Math achievements at the academic achievement assembly April 21.

First in Math is a web-based computer program that the students participate in during free time at school and at home. The students complete fact drills and various games that reinforce different types of math topics. First In Math teams from grades 3, 4 and 5 were challenged to earn 4,000 stickers over the last four weeks. The stickers earned them points for the various games and activities that they completed successfully. The teams reaching the 4,000 sticker goal were able to pick a teacher to be pied in the face at the academic assembly. 28 teams participated in the pie throwing party.

“The idea of throwing pies at teachers was an incentive created to motivate the children to spend as much time as possible on the site earning as many stickers as possible. The ultimate reward is, of course, their growth in math skills and concepts,” said Mary Keener, AIS teacher.
