For some folks, hot sticky nights, $10 beers and horrific parking are a deterrent.
For others, it’s just another summer concert season with a schedule that includes dozens of shows featuring familiar names along with bands on the rise.
This year, stalwarts such as the Dave Matthews Band, Jimmy Buffett, KISS and Tim McGraw (to name a few), are coming to our area. Also, the calendar reveals dates from diverse and high-profile acts like Skrillex, Wiz Khalifa and OneRepublic.
Here’s a look at the 2014 summer concert season:
Blossom Music Center 1145 W. Steels Corners Road, Cuyahoga Falls (all Ticketmaster locations or ticketmaster.com)
Jack Johnson with Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, 7:30 p.m. May 30, $34.50 to $59.50. The soft-spoken, ukulele-jamming Jack Johnson is making a big splash with his summer headlining tour in support of new CD “From Here To Now To You.”
Lady Antebellum with Billy Currington and Joe Nichols, 7 p.m. May 31, $29.25 to $54. Lady Antebellum’s decision to title its latest release “Golden” was apt, considering so far record sales are stalled at gold, not platinum level. The Hillary Scott-led act hopes its “Take Me Downtown Tour” breathes new life into the album.
Tim McGraw with Kip Moore and Cassadee Pope, 7 p.m. June 8, $29.50 to $69.50. McGraw just keeps on traveling down that platinum country highway. Last year, the Nashville star, who has sold more than 40 million albums in his career, scored his 34th No. 1 song with “Highway Don’t Care.”
Zac Brown Band, 7 p.m. June 14, $29.50 to $59.50. Nashville’s hit act Zac Brown Band surprised fans late last year releasing EP “The Grohl Sessions, Vol. 1,” which (yes!) was produced by ex-Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters singer-guitarist Dave Grohl.
Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band, 8 p.m. June 24, $36.50 to $136.50. Last seen playing Northeast Ohio in 2011, Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band returns to the area as part of its “This One’s For You — Tour 2014.” The “booze in the blender” singer recently released new record “Songs From St. Somewhere.”
Dave Matthews Band, 7 p.m. June 27, $40.50 to $75. Dave Matthews Band changed things up this summer with a special “Evening With” show. The popular jam-band lite act will be playing two sets nightly that range from solo and acoustic moments to all out rocking affairs. This also includes a stripped-down pairing of Matthews with guest guitarist Tim Reynolds.
Toby Keith with Colt Ford and Krystal Keith, 7 p.m. June 29, $34 to $89. You can’t judge a book by its cover, but you can sure guess which artists are on a tour based on the name. This one is called the “Shut Up & Hold On Tour.”
Journey with the Steve Miller Band and Tower of Power, 6:45 p.m. July 8, $36 to $151. The “Wheel in the Sky” that is the obligatory Journey summer concert tour keeps on turning with a classic rock night of sing-along hits.
Warped Tour, noon July 17, $37.50. When it comes to getting the biggest bang out of your concert-spending buck, you just can’t beat the Warped Tour, which features dozens upon dozens of bands. This year the punk-inspired bill includes Mayday Parade, The Devil Wears Prada, Saves the Day, The Maine and Less Than Jake.
Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bad Company, 7:30 p.m. July 22, $35 to $99.50. While the smart phone glow has become the norm in the new millennium, odds are classic rock fans will be blazing their Bic lighters during “Freebird.”
James Taylor, 8 p.m. July 25, $25 to $99.50. Like a “Steamroller,” James Taylor keeps moving along at his own pace with another mellow evening of ’70s jams.
Rascal Flatts with Sheryl Crow and Gloriana, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 1, $36 to $76. The title track from Rascal Flatts’ new CD “Rewind” is already in the top 10. What’s interesting about this show is the fact ’90s alternative singer Sheryl Crow, supporting her latest album, the country “Feels Like Home,” is opening.
OneRepublic, 7 p.m. Aug. 6, $32 to $81. Supporting its latest effort “Native,” OneRepublic has announced a summer tour that includes a scream-fest show at Blossom Music Center. The group is currently riding high based on hit songs “If I Lose Myself,” “Feel Again” and “Counting Stars.”
Wiz Khalifa & Young Jeezy, 6 p.m. Aug. 8, $27.50 to $72.75. Easily the hip-hop bill of the summer, Wiz Khalifa is teaming up with Young Jeezy for the third annual “Under the Influence of Music” tour, which includes openers Tyga, Ty Dolla $ign, Rich Homie Quan and Sage the Gemini.
Motley Crue with Alice Cooper, 7 p.m. Aug. 12, $25 to $125. When rock bands such as the Rolling Stones and the Who are still around touring, it’s kind of hard to take Motley Crue seriously regarding the announcement of its “The Final Tour.” We all know hell famously froze over when the Eagles reunited after years apart, so that’s why we’re taking the hard rock band’s retirement claim with a pump of hairspray.
Kings of Leon with Young The Giant and Kongos, 7 p.m. Aug. 20, $29.50 to $69.50. Even though Kings of Leon’s recently released sixth studio CD “Mechanical Bull” may not be as popular as its previous efforts, fans of the Followill family act won’t be disappointed.
Luke Bryan with Lee Brice and Cole Swindell, 7 p.m. Aug. 21 & 22, $25 to $55. When you’re a country artist that can nearly sell out two shows at Blossom Music Center, odds are you may want to consider a stadium tour. That’s what Luke Bryan, who is supporting his latest platinum album “Crash My Party,” should be looking into for 2015.
KISS and Def Leppard, 7 p.m. Aug. 26, $32.50 to $169.50. Recent Rock Hall inductee act KISS is celebrating its accomplishment with a summer jaunt alongside ’80s rock act Def Leppard. Considering each outfit has been regularly touring with a revolving door of nostalgia bands from the ’80s for years, it was inevitable eventually the two platinum-groups would join forces.
Dierks Bentley, 7 p.m. Sept. 26, $25 to $44.75. Dierks Bentley returned earlier this year with his latest album “Riser,” which debuted at No. 6 on the country charts and includes chart-topping single “I Hold On.” Now the affable Nashville artist is putting together a fall tour that features special guests Chris Young, Chase Rise and Jon Pardi.
Cain Park Superior at Lee, Cleveland Heights (all Ticketmaster locations or ticketmaster.com)
Earth Wind & Fire, 7:30 pm. July 9, $52.50 to $99.50. R&B bellwether act Earth Wind & Fire defined the ’70s with its mainstream sounds. The “Let’s Groove” act is still going strong with a summer tour that brings them to Cleveland.
Jim Brickman, 8 p.m. July 19, $25 to $75. Shaker Heights native Jim Brickman brings his “Under the Stars Celebrating 20 Years Tour” to Cleveland Heights with openers Anne Cochran and Tracy Silverman.
Tori Amos, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 7, $30 to $55. More than 20 years ago, Tori Amos emerged on the music scene with an alternative-minded singer-songwriter style. Today, the “Cornflake Girl” artist is supporting her new album “Unrepentant Geraldines.”

Paul McCartney, 8 p.m. Jul 7, $28 to $250. At the ripe age of 71, Paul McCartney shows no signs of slowing down. The former Beatle is supporting his most recent album “New” with a huge set list including plenty of Fab Four tunes.
Katy Perry, 7 p.m. July 22, $28 to $125.50. Katy Perry’s run of hit singles continues with her recent No. 1 tune “Dark Horse.” In fact, to date, Perry has sold more than 48 million digital singles during her six-year career. No word on whether Perry will be bringing beau John Mayer on tour.
Miley Cyrus, 7 p.m. Aug. 4, $19.50 to $89.25. With her tongue undoubtedly sticking out all evening long, Miley Cyrus brings her controversial Bangerz Tour to the Steel City. What remains to be seen is whether the pop singer will still be on the road come August.
The Black Keys with Cage the Elephant, 8 p.m. Sept. 13, $33.25 to $71.25. The Black Keys truly became a mainstream act with its 2011 effort “El Camino.” Now the Akron duo – Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney – is hoping to keep the momentum going with its new album “Turn Blue,” which includes hot lead single, ”Fever.”
