A Hubbard graduate who is a finalist for the Scholarship America Dream Award will appear on a national talk show Friday morning with 11 other finalists.
Ryan Bosela, 19, will appear on “Katie,” hosted by Katie Couric, which will air at 4 p.m. Friday on ABC WYTV Channel 33.
The winners will be announced on the show.
Bosela is a 2013 graduate of Hubbard High School and Trumbull County Career and Technical Center.
He studied engineering and architectural drafting and is now a freshman at Pittsburgh Technical Institute, a two-year, private, for-profit school, where he’s working toward a drafting degree.
He said he would like to use the scholarship to finish his degree there, and because it is renewable, he may be able to use it toward another degree.
He applied for the scholarship in December and was notified in April that he was a finalist.
He gave a video of himself to the show in which he described his love of architecture since his childhood.
He doesn’t know what he eventually will do with his degree or degrees, he said.
“It’s a realistic dream to draw plans of public-sector commercial buildings,” he said, such as hospitals, schools and libraries. “At least for now,” he added.
He was flown to New York for the show’s taping and to meet Couric, who is a founder and sponsor of the award.
Fundraising to support it was spurred by an initial donation of $350,000 from her in 2011, according to the website scholarshipamerica.org.
Scholarship awards are between $5,000 and $15,000 each year, beginning in the second year and growing by $1,000 each year until graduation for up to a five-year degree program.
